hello
i am having some problems with my 4200. last week it would not start and i finally figured it was the fuel shut off solinoid. when i removed it, it would go in and right back out when the key was turned on. i cleaned it real good and it had a dark fluid in it that looked like oil. when i put it back on it worked great then i ran it for the day and the next day the same problem. took it off and the same oil looking stuff was on it and in it and its movement was not smooth. cleaned and reinstalled worked fine for a couple hours and when i shut it down i have the same problem again. what could be getting in this thing to stop it from engaging. i drained my fuel and put some additive in it just in case of stale or bad fuel. but i dont know what to do.
thanks

You might want to check or ask your dealer about this....You could have a problem with a IE: spellong ??? Thermistor,an electrical part that is located behind the fuse panel that can cause starting problems.....there have been other 4000 series have the same problem...it is an easy fix.

Not long ago I read about a similar problem on a 00 series Deere.(on a differant site)
Oil was getting behind the shut off soliniod and shorting it out.
Required a new soliniod to fix the problem

any idea how oil could be getting past the solinoid. and as for the thermistor i ordered one and the dealer had no idea what it was. i have it but have not installed it yet. does anyone know exactly where it goes. i am no expert but i thought it had something to do with the voltage and i am getting a good 12V at the solinoid. i had thought about replacing the solinoid but dont want to waste $105 cause i dont see what would prevent this from happening to a new one unless the oil or fluid that i am seeing is actually coming from the solnoid breaking down inside. and i dont think there is anything inside it that could cause that. still open to suggestions and i will call the dealer tomorrow to see if they can be of any help.
thanks

I had a problem with the thermister. The tractor would start sometimes and wouldn't start at other times (usually when I really needed it). The $3.80 thermister solved my problem. However, I never did take the solenoid off to look at it. I have attached the post that helped me. To get to the thermister, you need to remove the fuse box housing. It's a little difficult to see, but keep looking behind all the wires.

hello again
i bought a new solenoid and put it on yesterday run the 4200 all day without a problem but this morning i went to start and have the same problem again. solenoid not working because it is full of oil. my oil level has remained the same so i dont see where it is going. called a local dealer and he seems to think something might be leaking in the injection pump and suggested a new one $2500.00 or having the old rebuilt. this thing only has 310 hours on it. any other ideas or how much does a rebuild normally run. when i get the thing running everything seems fine untill i shut it off. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

This is a DTAC from Overseas, but does seem to be your problem

Solution Number: 31400659
Doc ID: 3100651

Solution Summary: ( SCS English UK ) fuel pullin circuit doesnot engage

Publication Date: NOV 28 2001

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

**Paper copies of solutions may not be the most current solutions**

PROBLEM:
the fuel pullin circuit does not engage On examination of the solenoid the is evidence of oil within the solenoid which requires additional force to pull in the plunger Replecemnet solenoid reacts the same
SOLUTION:
Consider the fitment of a replacement Thermistor part no LVU10323 The thermistor controls the operation of the fuel shut off pull in relay Should the relay fail to engage the Thermistor may not allow an earth circuit for the relay thermistor may be disengaging prematurly to expell the oil behindn 6the plunger Addition lnfo: for cold conditions use a 5W 30 engine oil the lower viscosity oil will be displaced easier from within the solenoid to allow operation

i already have the part and i will try to get it on. i hope that fixes it because $4.00 is much better than $2500 when it has to come out of my pocket.
thanks

Try the thermister, you will like it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif We just had another 4300 today that a thermister cured. Concerning injection pump replace/rebuild, an injection pump will last indefinitely as long as you use a good grade of fuel that is from a clean source and has no water contamination. Water in an injection pump is like throwing dirt in your air cleaner.
