4200 PTO noisy

I have a 2000 4200. The PTO shafe turns when it is not engaged. when I have a tiller of PH digger hooked up I have to set it on the ground to get it to stop turning. I also hear a cliking noise that seems associated with the PTO. I have checked the shift linkage and it is working right.

Is this normal?

I have a 4300 but have not had that problem.

If the shift linkage isn't working right, then there could be something loose from it,

Kennyd probably could tell you something.

Is it normal? Definitely NOT! If all is well with the linkage from the handle, then I would suspect the PTO clutch is failing. You might wan to invest in the FSM (factory service manual) for your machine if you intend on fixing it yourself...

Thanks Kenny,

I kinda figured it wasn't right. How do I tell which manual to get, and is the CD version a good choice? For the life of me I can"t find any number on my JD that resembles 120000. There is a PIN on the frame that starts with LV4200. There is a tag on the bell housing that says model HYD4WD and has a serial number that starts with 201649.
I've got a spec #, equipment #, and engine #, but nothing with a 120000 or 122000.

The operators manual that came with it is for serial no. 120001 -

The number 120001 means 120001 and up. Your serial number is above that.
There must be a different manual for 119999 and below.

I have the CD for mine but I wanted the paper. The paper is too much $ I just print the pages I need and throw them away when I am done. No greasy prints the next time I use it! After using the disk I prefer it over the book.

Got the CD for parts and service. It looks like the PTO brake is not working. What happens if I don't fix it for a while? The PTO clutch works great - locks up tight and releases. But the brake does little to nothing. I'd rather not tear it down until next winter, but I dont' want to tear things up.

Will anything get damaged from the PTO brake slipping?

Never heard of the PTO brake on my 4300. I'd much rather have my implements coast to a stop when I disengage than the pin snapping belt breaking way they stop now. Is there any way to adjust this brake?
OK, just dug out my manual, found the brake, not gonna mess with it ;-),
wish the dealer had mentioned the two speed PTO when I orderred the tractor though

If it is clicking while running, it may be something in the trans... Don't be afraid to pull the back cover and take a look. Drain the oil first. Here is the inside of the 4400. I don't have a picture of the back plate, but the PTO shaft meshes with the gear you see on the lower right to get power to the mid PTO. Check those teeth to make sure you have not dropped and bearing and broke something. Take a look around, and see if you see any metal inside.

Now you're probably asking why did I take my cover off? This was KennyD and Wayne's spring project last year when we installed the mid-PTO on my 4400. KennyD thought it was fun to see my poor 4400 all taken apart, but all is well and no real problems.
