4200 won\'t start

I bought it (4wd, Hydro & FEL) a few months ago and changed the fluids, filters, etc. It was running great when I stopped it 2 weeks ago. I started it Friday. It ran for 5-10 seconds, coughed and died. When I tried to start it, the battery was weak and then just the solenoid clicked. The battery was very low on water. I took it off the tractor, refilled it with distilled and slow charged it. After I put it back in it cranks fine but won't start. I've checked the fuse, the PTO is off and there is plenty of fuel in the fuel filter bowl. I pulled up and down on the pedals as a frieng recommmended w/no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Re: 4200 won\'t start

Hi Paul -

I'm no diesel mechanic, but I do have diesel chipper and tractor, and since you haven't gotten any replies I'll try my best to be useful.

I always try the simple stuff first. It sounds like a fuel problem, so maybe crack a fitting on one of your injectors and see if they're getting fuel. If not, try some of these troubleshooting tips from my Kubota manual. Air in fuel system (bleed), fuel pipe clogged (clean), fuel filter clogged (change) - or just take it out temporarily and bleed - , fuel leak due to loose injection pipe retaining nut (tighten), or injection pump malfunctioning (hope not).

To bleed the system: 1) fill the fuel tank with fuel and open the fuel cock (at the filter) 2) open the air vent cock on the fuel injection pump (they say cock a lot) 3) start the engine (well if we could start the engine .....) and run for about 30 seconds, then stop the engine, 4) close the air vent cock.

If the injector is getting fuel, maybe the fuel is bad, or has water in it - maybe add fresh fuel, or crank for a while with all injectors cracked until any possible water gets out of the system.

Anyway, it sounds like fuel. Sometimes on my chipper it won't start because of a bad electrical connection on the system that cuts power to the fuel pump when oil pressure is lost - maybe there is some simple electrical connection that is bad.

Hope this helps, John

Re: 4200 won\'t start

You don't say where you are or how cold it is. The glow plug operation on the 4000 JDs is tricky. The manual says to turn the key between "on" and "start" position and hold until you hear a click from the glow plug solenoid. There are two problems with this: 1) tough to find that position without a glow indicator light on the panel, and 2) most of us with "older" hearing won't hear that solenoid click. Some say they can see the panel lights dim a bit and then brighten when the solenoid clicks off.

Best way to ensure you have glow plug operation is to leave your shift indicator in "H" or "L" or pull up the PTO switch. Turn ignition switch to "start" position and hold for a count of 5. Then run your shift indicator to "N" or push in the PTO switch (both have to be this way to start, no matter which one you worked before going to "start" position).

If this doesn't work, I'd suspect water in the fuel. Remove the fuel bowl, dump it and replace and allow to fill. Think there's a vent position on the 3 way switch to the fuel bowl. Might be a good idea to buy a new fuel filter and replace it before replacing the bowl.

If you have a FEL in place, your fuel bowl may be behind one of its towers or arms. In this case, remove the 12 mm bolt that holds the fuel bowl assembly to the frame. This will then allow you to rotate the assembly up to where you can get your fingers or channel locks onto that ring that holds the fuel bowl in place.

Good luck. Your tractor could be a tad different from my 4010, but I'm betting it isn't too much so.

I wouldn't go messing with those injector lines. They're high pressure stuff. In 28 years of driving diesel Benz automobiles, I've never had to touch the injectors.

Re: 4200 won\'t start

If Its like the JD 790 You blew the fuel stop solinod. It should be a 3 amp fuse. I would recommend replacing the battery with a new one or it will happen again. Trust me if the fuse is blown your battery has a short in it and will only get worse. I have seen it 2 times on my old 790 Over 5 years and once on my neighbors 790 this past summer.

I hope this helps.
