The right brake on my 4210 is sticking. I've pulled the brake rod off the arm at the rear wheel, so that I make sure the arm at the rear wheel is fully back disengaging the brake, and to keep it from dragging the tractor down. It feels like the shaft where it goes into the tranny may be dirty causing it to bind. How do it get it "unstuck"? Any suggestions?

I have the same problem on my 4410e. I will be watching your post for a solution. If I press hard on the brakes the right wheel will drag (especially on snow).

I think I fixed the sticky brake problem. I coated the shaft with Liquid Wrench and then grabbed the brake arm (where the brake rod connects to) with large channel locks and worked it back and forth quite a bit, repeated this process several times, and it seemed to be ok. I bolted the brake rod back up and it feels ok now.

Goodolboy, you might give this a shot. Hope it works for you. :D

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier...I have heard that the brake shafts corrode/rust where they enter the case, I believe the root cause is the hydro tranny's because we rarely use the brakes! You fixed it the bast way possible without major disassembly.

KennyD was right on, the brakes do tend to corrode up on hydros.

Thought I would update my thread, this weekend the left side brake started sticking as well. This time, what seemed to work the best, is I got a can of Liquid Wrench spray penetrating oil. This stuff foams up and stays put pretty well. I also put a strong bungee cord (the round kind, not the black rubber kind) on the left brake linkage and hooked it to the rear of the tractor, to aid the rather wimpy return spring. Every time I get in the tractor I spray both brake linkages where they go into the case and work the brakes. So far this seems to have worked, as I really dont want to do a major disassembly.

Greg, try some Fluid Film, it has no solvents (that evaporate) in it and will last longer than the LW you are using.

Most, if not all JD dealers sell it...It is expensive-but the way it last's it's worth it.
