Just depleted my first tank of gas (last fuel gauge bar blinking for 20 minutes) and notice my engine hours meter at 12. At 6 gallons I'm calculating a little less than 1/2 gallon per hour. Is that what others get? has anyone done the math for their 324/424 more accurately? Just curious what others are experiencing.

Hi Jam242ti, congrats on finishing your first 12 hours. This question is a little hard for anyone to answer, since any fuel consumption comparison would depend on knowing and having identical engine speeds/work loads. The hours meter simply counts the time your tractor engine is running, but not at what RPM, let alone a graph of fuel flow/speed over time. So while your 12 hours may have had an average RPM of 2500, another 424 may have been closer to 2000 for that time. I will say that as a 424 TLB owner, I'm routinely impressed by how fuel efficient the engine is. I'm coming up on my 50-hour mark - I couldn't tell you how many times I've filled up, but it seems fairly seldom. Efficient diesels are Yanmar's claim to fame, after all.

I don't run mine at low rpms except to jump off and grab/move something and as these motors basically drive pumps except for pto work i thought the fuel usage would be more similar than different. I was just wondering what the actual data is. You make excellent points.
