International 424
Just bought a 424 over the weekend and only thing that it needs right now is a good brake job. How easy/difficult/expensive is this? Any special tools required? Any recommended manuals I should try to find?

Thanks,
Jeff

It's not bad job. Unhook the actuator rod, and take out 5 bolts, the brake assembly will come off in your hands.

Aftermarlet brake discs (Takes 2 per side) with just a quick Google check look to be about $16.00 ea., and up.

If the bull pinion shaft seal isn't leaking, it's pretty simple. Take the acctuating assembly apart, and clean up the balls, and recess's. I use an air angle grinder, and medium roloc pads to buff them up. Maybe a small wire brush to get into the bottom's of the recess in the actuator's. Manuals say not to lube, but I always put a thin film of never seize on the balls, and in the recess. Just a light film, smeared in by finger.

Check the actuating balls for flat spots. I think they are about 7/8" dia., and should be available through aftermarket places too, if needed.

Basic tools to take apart. Ratchet, and proper socket. Maybe a hammer to bump it loose. I use offset adjustable pliers, or screwdriver to pop off, or to remove the springs on the actuator, and put back on. Maybe a torque wrench to tighten the housing bolts.

I looked up a gas model 424, and this is the part number for the discs. 395161R1 . You may want to go to Case/IH and double check for sure... Copy and paste that number to Google (works best for me, for number of hits), or you favorite search engine, and happy shopping..!!

An I&T manual will get you through on items like this, although they do leave out a lot, compared to a IH Blue Ribbon manual. I've found many manuals on ebay, you just have to look and shop for the best deal. But most Blue Ribbon manuals are in sections of the tractor.

We got by for years with an I&T, but I would look for an operators manual, lke on ebay...

Thanks for the input! Will I need to pull the wheels to remove the brake assembly? It looks like it but I haven't had a good chance to dig around back there to see how easy it is to get to the bolts.

Thanks Again!

You shouldn't have to, but not sure how far your rear wheels/tires are set in.

Bolts are threaded approx. 1 1/4" " on the ends, with a total length of 3 1/2 to 4 inches or so. Not sure about the footboard being in the way though, removal may be necessary, to make it a lot easier to get to.

Just be careful if your working underneath it, instead out from it. If you don't hold onto the acutator rod when you remove it, it may drop out. Everything together may weigh 10-15 lbs.

Can you tell if the seal is leaking..?? If it is, check the bull pinion bearing behind it. If it appears to be bad, then it gets into a little more work. You'll then need to pull the bull pinion shaft bearing cage. Not a bad job either, but on older models like the "H", you needed to remove the trans. cover, and remove the bull gear, to allow the cage to pass by the bull gear, the way it is made, or if you pull hard enough, you break the bearing cage. Don't ask how I know... One of the little things an I&T manual leaves out, but is in another section... Go figure... So if you find an I&T for it, be sure and read it thoroughly, if it comes to that.

Let us know how things go..!!
