425 Kohler model number secret

I have decided I wish to replace the Robin engine (20 hrs) in my 422 with the Kohler. My starting problem is fixed, but it just does not have enough torque for my liking and my hills.

I contacted power trac for pricing on parts for the conversion. While PT was helpful, the price for the Kohler appeared outragous and they would not give me the model number so I could get it from an alternate source. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I would appreciate it if a recent 425 owner could provide the complete model number of their Kohler so I can perform this swap at a reasonable cost.

As an owner of a 'none-starter' I know I may face this choice someday(years from now hopefully) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif,...so it goes without saying there will be much interest here as you forge this trail.

Keep us posted(pictures too) on your progress...
Good measurements from your Robin will help a Kohler dist. match up your requirements...

I think Kohler came out with an engine that is now 28hp
in the same command - series - check out their website
- if all bolts up which it should - may as well get all the hp
you can - many source sell the kohler on line

Also check out the AEGIS liquid cooled engines from kohler. More torque, higher torque rise, quiter....very nice. It just might slip in there. The block looks very similar.

But with this come more $$$. Then you have to be adventurus and creative enough to find a place for the radiator. (sounds sort like a dare doesn't it?)

just my two and a half cents..... the liquid cooled Kohler eng. has had it's problems in the commercial mowing world. <font color="red"> it would not be my choice at this time </font> one of my subcontractor has an exmark with that engine, i had to let that particular crew go.

I must admit, installing a Chevy 350 crossed my mind when I got the PT quote for the motor only. I could get a crate motor for the same amount.

I may try to modify the Robin engine cradle, pump adapters and spec out the lovejoy connectors myself as the PT reluctance to provide parts info does kind of drive me crazy. After all, it is not rocket science.

The 28 hp motor sounds interesting, if it is air cooled. Water cooling is out of the practical region, because once the weather breaks, my attention will shift from the 22 hp toy to the 385? hp toy.

Of course, nitrous is always an option for the 422 if I can figure out how to ****** the timing.

we have to start the green beasty almost every day. we found out that the choke cable has moisture in it and in low temperatures you can't pull the choke.

so here is what we do with all our Kohler 25hp engines, which are outside all the time, just covered with a plastic (blue, get the picture) cover. at the very end of your seat time:
1. slowly trottle the engine to it runs very slow.
2. turn/shut the engine off.
3. open the choke 1/2 to 2/3 (each engine is a little different)of the way and you should not have any problems on the third try .... your green beasty will hummm.
after the third try when the temperature is under 20 degrees we use a battery pack right to the starter. <font color="red"> if you have never done this procedure have someone show you specifically how to do this</font>
