I have a loose tilt steering column on my 425. The power steering is fine.Just have about a total of 1/2 inch side to side play. I have a downloaded service manual but little help as I haven't been able to figure out how to remove the column and the manual just says to remove all parts necessary. Anybody know how? I have loosened up the rear body and the foot boards to gain access to the lower air intake screen. Does the entire instrument assembly have to come out? I know the cluster just pops out but cannot figure out best way to gain access to column to determine what is worn.

The JD service manual sounds a lot like some of the auto manuals I have looked at. An example: To remove heater core. Drain coolant, remove heater core. To install new core, reverse process.

Great help huh?

P.S. Sorry I have no idea how to solve your problem.

I figured it out and it is a pain labor wise to gain access. You have to remove the floorboard panel to get access to the lower mounts. I decided that it would be easier to remove the fender and seat panel which is easy. Mine had a lot of dirt and debris that needed cleaning out. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to get the upper part of instrument mounting panel away from the tilting mechanism without tearing it up. also getting that part around the hyd. controls was a pain. Anyway I figured out my problem and it is simple. The tilt mechanism part that is shaped like a yoke was very loose. It bolts in two places with carriage bolts and there are steel bushings that allow the bolts to be tight without binding the tilt. I think one of my bushings was missing as I only found one and I swept my garage floor in case that I had dropped it. Anyway all I need is two new bushings and I am going to Loctite the nuts even though they are nylon inserted.
I am glad that I don't have to pay a dealer. There are a lot of electrical plugs to deal with but not bad, I did have to disconnect the ignition switch from the panel which should have been easy but wasn't and I messed up the plastic retaining nut. I have a metal one from another project That I am going to use. I don't pretend to be a mechanic and I guess by the time I am through I will have at least 4 hours or more in this project. I don't want to have to redo it later. You are dealing with a lot of plastic and don't want to have to buy any if possible.

One more thing that has to come off is the steering wheel mine wasn't too bad but from what I read, some are. I just soaked the mounting area with penetrating oil and after a while kept hitting the wheel with just my arms from the bottom.
