My dealer just picked up my tractor. I was using the loader on Thursday and Hydraulic fluid starting pouring out of the front end of the tractor near the radiator (Looked like it was coming out of a garden hose). My dealer tells me that he has seen this before and it is caused by battery fumes causing corrosion around the hydraulic oil cooler, and that the cooler has probably ruptured. He is planning to replace the battery, the battery box and the oil cooler. Has anyone else heard of this occuring?? Also, it looks like the fluid has killed my lawn in the areas it spilled. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do for this??

OIL COOLER LEAKS CORRODES

Complaint or Symptom:
The radiator mounted oil cooler leaks and/or
shows corrosion.
Problem:
1. The two battery manifold caps vent
electrolyte gas to the atmosphere during
the normal charging cycle. (See figure 1)
2. The battery gas is drawn over the oil
cooler fins by the engine fan.
3. The gas condenses on the warm cooler
fins and corrodes the aluminum material.
Solution:
1. Install a new battery (figure 2) with six
screw in vent caps which:
A. Condense the escaping electrolyte
gas to drain back into the battery.
B. Reduce venting to the atmosphere.
2. Check oil cooler for damage and replace
as necessary.
Parts:
1-TY25258 Battery (12V, 500 CCA)
1- AM122482 Oil Cooler
1- M71400 Boot (Battery Positive Cable)

While checking the dead battery on my 1999 4400 in January. I discovered that the oil cooler, battery shelf & radiator were all severly corroded. JD replaced all the items.

I had the same problem with my 4300 although it did not get to the point of leaking. The dealer replaced cooler and battery under warrenty but I had to pay for the battery upgrade. He suggested that I flush off the area periodically to avoid it in the future.

Tractor came home yesterday. New oil cooler, washed and with new hydro pedals ( They fixed the cruise control, and it required new pedals).

joecdeere,

Great information. Checked the battery on my 4300 syncreverser that I bought last week. Noticed battery was leaking acid and corroding battery shelf. My dealer is going to order a new shelf and a new battery with the screw in vent caps. My tractor doesn't have the oil cooler. Is this for the hydraulic transmission or was this an add on? Also any recommendations on preventing corrosion to external part of radiator. Service manager mentioned some kinda spray on acid neutalizer.

Thanks,

Glad to see I'm ( we're ) not alone.

My New Holland had started showing the signs of this corrosion at about 30 hours. I decided to take matters into my own hands and dumped the OEM battery and installed a Optima SEALED unit. No vents, no leaks , no corrosion ( I hope ). These batteries use a different lead pack and the electrolite is no really available to leak out.

The average battery runs around $ 130, and you'll spend a few bucks rigging up a mount.

I think it was worth it. Why have the dealer install another OEM battery that can leak ??

Happy Trails

If you replace it with a delco maintence free (the one with the
green eye in the top)battery will also cure that gasing problem,we switched our fleet of 110 kenworths over to
delco batteries about 6 yrs ago and have never had a corrosion or gasing problem since,I was told delco batteries
have a calcium base acid in them to prevent them from
gasing as much as other batteries--it must work.My new
4310 has a battery called Strong Box Hibenator,it has 6
vented caps on it.I'm going to replaced it with a delco
and put the Strong Box in my ole chevy pickup,No need taking
a chance when corrosion is so hard to stop once it gets started

I spoke with the mechanic where I got my tractor and he gave me a new vent cap set up with a long hose that would allow excess acid to drain down under the tractor. He didn't feel that this was the right fix but the only one Deere had given him.
I ended up replacing the battery with a sealed type from Hawker. The Hawker is actually designed as a UPS backup battery system but works great. It's capable of being fully discharged up to 450 times and still coming back to a full charge. Life expectancy in a UPS environement is 10-15 years. I've had it in my tractor for about 6 months now with no problems. A friend of mine has used one in his Chevy V8 pickup for about 5 years now with no trouble.

Sorry to dig up old treads but I am glad I found this one. I bought a used 4300 a few months ago and am still learning about it. So far I really like it and it has done everything I asked of it.
I have been searching the internet trying to find out anything I can about this tractor.
I found this thread today and thought I would come home and check it out tonight. Well the battery had a lot of grime but there was no corrosion on the battery pan but there is some on the oil cooler.
The two bottom full rows have some damage to the fins but there does not look like there is any damage to the tubes.
Is it okay just to remove these areas of fins to get rid of the existing corrosion? The two areas are just .5 to 1 inch or so long. The one area is solid white and very hard. Scraping it with a screw driver is about the only way I have found to get it off. Does anyone have any other recommendations for cleaning up the corrosion? I am looking into another battery also.
Thanks for any advice.
