My 2001 JD 4300 cruise control stopped working. The switch will not engage and the normal green indicator does not light up. How do I trouble shoot? The manual has an electrical check list, but the location of the respective components is not shown, and it looks complicated.

When you reference the manual, are you talking the service manual?

Stomp on the brake pedals a few times to see if the switch is stuck. Lube the brake pedal shaft on both sides of the frame. Clean, adjust, and test the brake pedal switch. If it's like my 4310 it's behind the right side cowl.

The 4310 cruise is different animal than the 4300.. being that the forward pedal is held in position with a magnet when cruise is 'engaged', vs the 4310 is part of the electronic module. Don't want lube on that forward pedal for the magnet to hold it, I don't think.

Looking up some parts and info it seems the 4300 does have a grease zerk for the brake shaft. It also has a micro switch that I assume is what would open to tell the system to remove power from the magnet.
I think my advice is still relevant. If the brake pedal sticks and leaves the switch open the cruise control will not engage. If the switch gets out of adjustment or fails the cruise control will not engage.
Seeing as how the operating manual says to press the master brake pedal located on the right to disengage the cruise I assume the switch is on the right linkage somewhere.
The switch is actually the same part number on the 4300 and the 4310. It is RE30714 and should look like this.
