I own a 4300 JD hydro and was reading that the 4010 20 30 etc manuals apparently call for a hydro fluid/filter change at 50 hours. I began to look at my owners manual thinking it called for a 200 hour hydo fluid/filter change but in fact it calls for the maintenance to be done at 500 hours.
Confused, I sent an e-mail to JD and their response ignored my questions about whether they felt it prudent to change at the 50 hour/ 200 hour service interval or wait for the 500 hours. Whether this was a change in their recommended service procedure interval which should apply to my tractor and/or why they were recommedning 50 hours on the New JD cuts. The response says follow recommendations in YOUR manual. No explanations for the differences.
I would appreciate your thoughts on the differences and why the recommendations may be different and whether you would wait for 500 hours to change the transmission fluid and filter.

Stuart,

I saw something similar with my gear transmissions. My 4100 owners manual called for a tranny oil change every 500 hours, and my 4310 owners manual says tranny oil and filter change at first 50 hours, then change filter (doesn't mention tranny oil) every 200 hours, then tranny oil and filter both every 400 hours. Given the small number of hours I put on, I will probably change both oil and filter every 200 hours so I don't forget what I did the time before. For me, this could be 2 or 3 years between every 200 hours.

I'm not sure if Deere changed their mind on what is appropriate or if one of the manuals had a typo. I know that the crank case capacity in the 4100 owners manual was wrong and some people had a problem with blown seals as a result.

Stuart -

When I started doing maintenance on my 4600, I noted differences between the on-line electronic manuals (now since removed for the 00's) and the paper copy that I received with the tractor. In the on-line manuals I found the following:
- 50 Hours: change fluid and transmission filter
- 200 Hours: change fluid
- 500 Hours: change flud and transmission filter

plus it noted a change in the hydraulic filter specification to a larger one than the paper manual indicated.

Lesson learned: always check the on-line stuff to verify things since JD never sends out updates to the paper manuals. My local dealer said that they never order or work with paper manuals anymore - they just get new CDs monthly and refer to them. You might want to check and see if someone had downloaded a copy of the 4300 manuals before they were removed. I have a 4400 manual if you want - someone on TBN was kind enough to download and send me a copy. If you want me to send it to you, send me an email and I'll ping it off to you.

Good luck - and keep posting here.... Second lesson learned was if in doubt, as the TBN crowd... They know more than the dealers do (and some ARE dealers). /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good job, Jim - that's the on-line page I was referring to. They also updated the items in the on-line manuals too (but they arn't available).

On a side note.. I always thought it was odd that when I brought home my new filter, it was much shorter than the one on the tractor. When I went back to the dealer with the difference and the part #'s (plus the printout of the page), they were a bit surprised as they still didn't have the updated information with the change... Sometimes I feel sorry for those folks as the information age has made the users sometimes more informed than they are. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
