I'm preparing to do the "every 200 Hrs" service. According to the manual I need to change the hydraulic fluid filter and the suction side filter. However it does NOT call for the transmission fluid itself to be changed.

My question is, without draining the transmission fluid, how much should I expect to have leak out when I change these filters? Or am I supposed to drain the fluid and then put it back in?

You will need to empty the fluid...But if that fluid is 200 hours old and how may years than you really should just change it while you are getting dirty. Hydraulic fluid is the blood in hydrostatic tractors:D

I'm surprised your manual calls for this 200 hour service. I have a 2005 4320 (and I thought it has the same engine as yours) and my manual called for a 400 hour change of the hydraulic oil fluid, hydraulic filter, and hydraulic suction screen element cleaning. Last winter I performed this service by first draining the 10 gallons of hydraulic fluid (which I replaced with new.) Fluid will definitely flow out changing the filters if you do not first drain it. Are you sure this service is being called for at 200 hours?

Sharp,

I agree. It seems odd to ask for the transmission filters to be replaced yet not the fluid itself. Especially if the fluid needs to be completely drained in order to change those filters.

Here's a excerpt from the manual:

Every 200 Hours
ï½· Change engine oil and filter.

ï½· Check battery electrolyte.

ï½· All Models: Change transmission oil filter.

ï½· All Models: Change suction side filter.

ï½· Check transmission oil level.

ï½· Clean fuel filter sediment bowl.

ï½· Inspect alternator belt and check tension.

ï½· Check and clean radiator cooling fins.

ï½· Lubricate 3-point hitch.

ï½· MFWD Models: Check front axle oil level.

ï½· Lubricate machine grease fittings.

ï½· Check tire air pressure.

ï½· Lubricate lower brake pivot tubes.

ï½· Check wheel bolt torque.

ï½· Check and clean rockshaft control valve filter.

ï½· Check air restriction indicator. Replace only primary filter unless secondary filter is visibly damaged or indicator shows an air restriction after the primary filter has been changed.

I have 230 hrs on this transmission oil (280 hrs overall). At this point I was thinking of going a little further on this oil, and doing the fluid / filter change as part of an "almost" 400 hrs service.

We might have the same engine, however we definitely have different hydro trannys, mine only takes a little over 6 gals.

Justin,

Interesting! After reading your reply I pulled out my 4320 Operator's Manual and saw printed on the cover that it applies to 4120, 4320, 4520, and 4720 models. So, apparently your 4310 has a different engine than the 4320 and therefore different service intervals. BTW, my service intervals read:

Every 200 Hours
- Check engine oil and filter. (recommended oil & filter change is annually)
- Inspect alternator belt.
- Check air restriction indicator light.
- Check wheel bolt torque.

Every 400 Hours
- Change transmission oil and filter.
- Clean transmission suction cup.
- Replace fuel filter.
- Remove air filter and inspect elements.

So, I would either ask your JD dealer's recommendation (probably do this first) or follow your manual's instructions (as inconvenient as this might be in dealing with the hydraulic fluid drain and replace.)

Hey Justin
I was doing a search for just this issue and came across this post. I was just curious what you ended up doing? My dealer said you should just lose a little fluid if you are changing just the filters although he didn't sound sure.
Thanks

I just did the 200 hr service on my 2003 4310 hydro and it for sure says to just change the filters and not the hydro oil and thats what I did. I drained it all out, changed all filters and put it back in, still lost a couple of gallons or more from what drained out when removing filters and what was in them.
