This past weekend I had the chance to have Wesdor help prepare a field for sweet corn. I was really impressed with his 4310 pulling an old 9 foot AC wheel disc. The picture shows my nephew (a construction engineer) operating a disc for the first time. The tractor really impressed me and I had to share.

When I saw that picture in your other post, I was going to ask what Deere was pulling that big disc. Thanks for letting us know. Is it HST or gear drive?

Seems to me that that land could use a tiller if vegetables are to be raised. But if not, then maybe the disc is making a good enough seed bed for the small seed. I'd also be concerned about the shading of the adjacent trees when they leaf out and cast a shadow on your plots. Corn doesn't do well near tall trees, IME.

That is a gear drive with ePower Reverser.

Glad to hear you think a tiller would be better. We don't own one and they are a bit expensive. At this point we plan to rent one for a day or two.

You are right - that is a pretty big disc for such a little tractor. And it was hooked up with a clevis through the tip of the tongue - not a very effecient way to pull.

Shade may be a problem, but the deer will probably be a bigger problem. The open area faces east and this is the top of a hill, so it will probably get more sun than this picture shows.

Beenthere,
you make a good point about the tiller. I am going to purchase one in the morning. Wesdor has told you the picture is a bit misleading. Shade will not be a problem, but deer will be. I face a challenge to get all ready, but that just gives me more seat time.

"".....it was hooked up with a clevis through the tip of the tongue - not a very effecient way to pull.""

How else would you pull a disc like that? I always hook it to a clevis on the drawbar and pull the tongue of the disc. Something I am missing? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Good luck with the tiller, and suspect a couple days to 'dry out' will help work up that soil. And along with this rain which I assume you are getting now, it should be better yet. The big disc might just work the ground up real good for corn planting. I was thinking tiller for the vegetable seeds.

It still seems to be early, although your early sweet corn would be nice to have in the ground, and then have to worry about frost in May (or late April).

You are correct that a clevis is the normal way to attach. However, this had a large tongue with a bottom portion that drug on any high clods of dirt. It was orginally for a much larger tractor.

Without 4WD I wouldn't have had a chance. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
