I am in the process of doing my 50 hr service on my 4310 and I just realized, after reading the manual, that the fluid level in the site glass on the rear of the tractor is high, as it completely fills the glass. According to the manual it is only supposed to be about at the mid level of the glass.

As far as I can remember the level has been high as long as I have owned it . Now I worry about not putting enough fluid in if I only fill the glass midway. Although I guess I would go with the manual vs. what a single factory worker did (in error).

So, as this was most likely an error, could this have caused any damage? I have 57 hrs on it.

My other thought is, from what I've gathered reading here, this tranny fluid is not a closed system. As it shares fluid with the hydraulics for the front SCV hydraulics, third SCV, and 3 pt hitch. So if that is the case then is my level may be a little high b/c of that equipment? I only have a 300 CX FEL, and I have not hooked anything up to my third SCV yet.

My 4115 manual says the same thing. However, when I asked the dealer about it he said don't worry...as long as you see fluid in the site glass you're fine. Doesn't exactly agree with the manual but, with 350 hr.s on the 4115 (with FEL, BH, ...) in just over a year, I've had no problems at all. I've preformed all maintenace, usually ahead of suggested schedule and changed the hydraulic fluid 3 times now (once due to buying a hydraulic wood splitter with fluid in it I didn't trust much. As long as the fluid reads properly on the dipstick, and I see some or even all of the site glass filled, I don't worry any more.

BTW, nice to get a break in the weather. Must have been a nice sunset across Champlain tonight. It was pretty nice just this side of the Greens.

TR,

The sunsets are awesome, in fact I am in the process of building a home that has an unbelievable view over Grand Isle with the Adirondacks in the distance, with stellar sunsets.

I will be posting some pics soon, I just need to figure out how to get the bit size of my pics down.

Thanks for the info on the fluid. BTW, I'm curious, is there any way to flush fluid from an attachment before you hook it up. I haven't had this come up yet for me but I would hate to have to change 7 gals of fluid b/c the fluid in one attachment was questionable.

Also, I am putting in synthetic hydraulic fluid in for the trransmission. I'm assuming this is no problem when it mixes with the fluid contained in my FEL when I reattach it. I'm not really questioning compatibility more of a question of mixing new with old. But I guess that's the way it's done on all tractors?

Justin,

Having lived on your side of the Greens for many years, I still miss the view across the lake at sunset. Cherish those sunsets....I'm not sure that of all the places I've ever been any sunsets are better.

I learned this from from a fellow TBN'er. As for posting pictures <= 100K, What do you use for an Op System? Hating to admit I use Microsoft /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif but, in XP I can go to "My Computer", get to the folder and picture file I want to post, select it and in a left side window an option comes up for "e-mail this picture" (or something like that). I double click on "e-mail this picture", another window comes up asking if I want to re-size all pic's for more efficient e-mail. I leave that selected "Yes" and click OK. From there it opens up my default e-mail (Outlook) and places a resized version of the pic in the Attachment bar. I don't e-mail it anywhere, I just double click it and choose to "save it to disk". When saving, I just ad "_Resized" to it's name. That will usually take a 1.3 - 2.5M picture and shrink it to 100K or less. There's also a website, some one told me about that you can send pic's to and they'll return them to you re-sized.

As for the ORIGINAL issue /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. Do check with your dealer. As I said, I usually follow the book to the letter but, my dealer seems to be right on the issue, at least with the 4115.

As for removing fluid from an attachment; For the used splitter I bought I had to get a couple of buckets for drainage, remove the hydraulic hoses, take a jack and force the piston back and forth until as much of the fluid was out as seemed would come out. Then, after changing the Hydro, I hooked up the splitter (hoses back on, ofcourse /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif) and had to add enough more fluid to the tractor to re-fill the splitter cylinder, while stopping and checking both the site glass and the dipstick, frequently. I kept an eye on it for a few days afterward, both when splitting and when off BH'ing or such. Seems to have worked fine.

Hope the house building goes well. You should open a thread on the "Projects" forum and keep us up to date on progress (especially with pic.'s....we all love pic.'s) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Justin,

Oops, got into the other subject too much and missed the question on synthetic mix with fluid in your FEL lines and cylinders. I have no expertise on that, at all. There are numerous threads on synthetic vs. standard fluids. Check for them. There are many very knowledgeable TBN'ers who could answer that, I'm sure.

I see NO reason to use anything other than JD's HyGard. I can see problems with switching, though. It is good stuff, reasonably priced, and won't cause warranty issues.

And Mike's one of them.... Always good advise, sometimes a bit of humor /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
