Hi Guys,

New to the forum and just purchased this used 4310. It pops out of 2nd gear too often when left to it's own devices. I have developed the habit of keeping my left hand on the shifter to prevent it. Causes and possible fixes? Appreciate your response. - Rich

More details please.
what load is the tractor under? ie specific job, or any job?
what revs, or any revs?
how many hours?

It is possible that 2 nd gear is not fully engaged, like only half or less meshed.
I'd select 2 nd gear and then pull the cover in order to see how well meshed that gear is.
Could be that the selector fork is bent somewhat or even worn a bit.

It is always possible that somebody put excessive pressure on the shifter while climbing in and out causing the forks to miss-align somewhat. (Like I wear size 12's , so I know it is possible.) Also caught my pant cuffs a few times.

Though I can't be exact, it seems it pops out toward 2k rpm and up. Seems like it vibrates out of gear. I can hear it start to chatter as it slips out. It doesn't do it immediate;y if I rev it in gear. but at times maybe a few mins later. Thx redman.

That makes sense. If I could only be that fortunate. I'm a newbie to the tractors. When looking at the parts images, what is the name of "cover" you are speaking of?

Year: 2002
Transmission: ePowrReverser
Type: power shuttle
Gears: 12 forward and reverse
Oil capacity: 25.2 qts [23.8 L]
Four gears (1-4) in three ranges (A-C) with reverser lever. Gears are synchronized and may be shifted on the move using the clutch. Tractor must be stopped to shift ranges. Forward/reverse direction changes may be done on the move, without the clutch, by using the reverser lever.
Speeds: With 11.2-24 rear tires.

On most and I guess yours also, the 'cover' is that plate that the shift lever goes thru. Generally there will be a plate with 6 or maybe 8 machine screws holding the plate in place with the shift lever centered and protected with a rubber boot to keep out water.
The shift lever protrudes inside and moves fore and aft as well as side to side to select the gears by moving 'forks'.
With that cover off you get a good view as to condition of gears, forks etc.
Once you determine which is 2nd gear you should be able to know better what is going on.
If that gear is only partly engaged then it could pop out easily and some adjustments could be made to the shift fork.
If you see worn or rounded corners on the gears then it is simple wear and tear from usage.

Good luck, and I hope for you that it proves to be bent or worn shifter fork.
