Well I got my new 4310 and everything has been great. No mechanical problems at all. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

On my old 4310 to get to the battery you had to pull out some pins on the grill guard and it would rotate away from the grill so you could access the battery. I thought this was a clever design.

Today I went out to the garage to really check the machine over for the first time. Opened the hood, and then I was going to check the battery but this new grill guard is securely bolted in the uprite position. There is no way to gain access to the battery.

Now which grill guard is the right one? The one that folds I would think. Does anyone else have the one that is bolted instead of pinned?

We just put a loader on a 4310 at work the other day with grill guard and I'll check for ya. My 4300 had the folding guard with 2 pins. I know the 790 just came out with a new grill guard that looks like the 4000 series grill guards. They could have mixed it up by accident but it might not mount in place.

Yellowsocks,

That was a quick response. Thanks. I think you may be right. So the non 4000 series tractors don't need the grill guard to fold to gain access to the battery? Maybe they can just swap it out if I bring it to them. Is it hard to remove the grill guard or is it a big process?

Ah I am wrong actually the 90 series or non 4000 series does need a tilting hood guard to get to the battery. To remover the grill guard there are a few bolts on each side. It would be a pain to do it every time. I would get your old hood guard back. The hood guard would be more of a pain to remove each time if you had the mid mount mower since there are 2 brackets that get mounted in between the frame of the tractor and the hood guard. When I was installing my hood guard on my old 4300 the wrench slipped and I smacked my mouth right on the front of the guard. I would hate to go through that every time to remove the brush guard. I will check tomorrow and see what's up with a new one we have on the lot.

Oh one more thing, when I was working in parts one day I saw a hood guard for a 790 and it was non foldable so I don't know what JD is doing. But until recently the 90 series had a really stupid brush guard that had not center grill protection. Now they are identical to the 4000 series guards.

Hi Craig - Got mine about a month ago and it's a fold down grill guard. Let me know if you want a close-up pic.

Take Care,

Could it be the same guard, just assembled with bolts in place of the pins??? I will look at mine and see if that would be possible, if so it would be easy to swap out.

I checked at work today and our new 4310 with 430 loader does in fact have the hood guard with the fold down pins. You might have got the wrong setup. We just put this loader on the tractor so it is not old stock.

I Looked at mine, I am betting someone goofed and put bolts in place of pins in the top position....
