JD 4310 Power Reverser
I have a 4310 with the powerreverser tranny. My idle speed is set at 950 rpm. Is there anyway to adjust the clutch on the PTO. I am having problems taking out the shear bolt on my 513 cutter when I engage the PTO on the tractor. It engages so quickly, that the blades snapping open on the cutter are shearing the shear bolt about every other time.
Cutting three acres of grass, I went through 10 shear bolts. I checked on a clutch assembly from Deere, but $280.00 seems a little steep to me. On my older MF, with hydro tranny, I can push in the clutch on the tracter, engage the rear PTO, then let the clutch out slowly to engage the PTO, but not on the 4310, when you pull up the knob for the PTO, it engages instantly, even if the tractor clutch is pushed in.
I have looked at less expensive clutches from other suppliers, but it seems to me that I shouldn't have to that expense if I can get the PTO to engage a little less agrressively.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
DT

I don't think there's any adjustment at all. It's either engaged or it's not.

On the shear bolt thing. Have you checked to make sure you are using the right grade?

I have a JD 4610, with PTO that engages the same as yours. I also have a tiller that uses shear bolts. Although the PTO engages all at once, I've never sheared a bolt. The shear bolts that came with the tiller are grade 8.8 metric, which is about the same as a grade 5 SAE.

Billy's giving good advice on the shear bolt number...I had the same on a Woods Bush Hog with my 4400Now, I have a clutch on the LX6/4710 combination. Also, I engage at very low RPM...even though it's a hydro, the lower RPM may not give the "jolt" when starting...FWIW...

This the key. Most engage all at once. The rpm needs to be low. There are very few tractors that don't engage all at once. My MF 1440 have a feather engagement that reduces shock so, you can engage at any speed, but again this is a rare option.

I have found the best way to engage mine is to depress the clutch, engage the PTO and then slowly release the clutch. It produces ultra smooth starts on the PTO and whatever implement you have attached. I can slowly engage the PTO lever as well, but the clutch provides even greater ability or degree of control. While it's simple to do at any speed, I try to do it at lower RPM's when possible. It's about the only time my clutch is ever used other then to start the tractor which requires the clutch to be fully depressed. The tractor is HST.
