I tried firing up the rear pto in my 4310 after a month break, and although the dash PTO indicator light lights when I pull the switch, the PTO does not engage. Just before I left town I mowed, and then put the tractor inside the barn where it sat until Saturday. The battery was weak when I got home but it did start.

I've checked and do not see any loose wires or connections...and don't see any bad fuses, though the operator manual is about useless for electronics. Anyone have any ideas ??? Thanks for any suggestions.

thanks...I went by the dealer today - I was able to pry out of the service rep that it's probably a bad relay (however my guess as to which one - nothing in the manual or fusebox identifies which relay might control the pto).

No problem Tractors Are sort of like boats They get rode hard put up wet & every time you turn around There is something simple wrong with no matter what the brand !

It could be any number of things. Dirt dauber nest, etc...
I would start at the seat switch and check underneath to look for loose wires.

Here's a snapshot of the relays out of the handbook.

Cal,
This has happened to me many times and the problem has always been the same connector . It's located on the right side along the transmission. There are 4 wires on each side into the connector. Look closely and also pull on the wires that go into this connector. They have a bad way about them coming loose inside the plastic housing. Mine has had it happen so many times I have rerouted wiring and removed the connector completely.

Got it!

Actually first thanks to several of you who posted similiar problems I found archived...thanks also Kyle for the relay info...

now, after going over all of the wiring, fuses, relays, etc...and testing for current...I beat (well, maybe a really hard tap) on the box the solenoids plug into, and...it works. Must be either a piece of debris in the solenoid or it just froze up. Hammer to the rescue!

Actually, let me echo several old posts...what a dumb place for the solenoids and wiring, or what a bad decision NOT to protect it from below.

Thanks again

My 02-4310 just did the same thing. I have a workshop manual, and checked and verified all the relays are working. I then checked the solenoid and it too checked out, BUT when pulling the pto switch on the solenoid gets hot. I'm guessing it's getting hot either cause it's bad, or because it's trying to move the corresponding hydraulic valve and can't. Sounds like the hammer thing was a good idea, but i didn't try it, and it's off to the dealer already. My dealer is great, and i told him about my troubleshooting.
ps: where is the 4 pin connector your talking about. is it the 4 pin one going to the two solenoids?

Cal,
That's great news and it's one that I will have to keep in mind if the PTO doesn't work.

Chris,
That is the same connector that I'm talking about. The wires might be pulled apart inside so check carefully to make sure they are getting contact.

follow up on mine: dealer replaced the solenoid and corresponding valve block, and it is fixed. so i don't know which one it was. bill was around $250, not bad since they picked it up and delivered too.
