My 4320 3 pth just started squealing when lifting a heavy load like 6' rotary cutter. It was fine until I got the tractor back from the dealer a few days ago after he installed the 485 backhoe which also needs the power beyond kit. I uninstalled the 485 backhoe for the first time this evening to hook up the rotary cutter and as soon as I went to raise the cutter there was a very loud squealing noise while the cutter was raising up. The noise is not so evident when the engine rpms are increased. I unplugged and plugged the power beyond hose (loop) and it did not make any difference. The hydraulic fluid level is fine.
Has anyone experienced this sort of thing? I plan to call the dealer tomorrow but thought I'd check here on the forum where there is an immense amount of knowledge and experience.

My 3320 does that when lifting the finish mower, which weighs about 700 lbs. It's done it since I bought it, but I've never really been worried about it.

I spoke to the dealer this morning about the 3 pt hitch squeal. He said it may be just air working it's way through the system and said to go ahead and use it as long as the noise is only when lifting and no other time. If the noise is constant, he said not to run it until they get a look at it. With some cycling of the 3 pt hitch hopefully any air will get purged and all will be OK. Dealer also said they've installed many of these backhoes with power beyond and this is the first he's heard of this so it doesn't sound like it is a pervasive problem.
Can't wait to get out there and try it when the rain stops.

The same happened to my 3320 when the dealer added my power beyond kit. Some debris from the install made it's way to the valve body and got stuck in the seat. The 3pt started cycling and fluctuating with an attachment on it. The solution was the replace the damged valve and I haven't had a problem since.

This is exactly what I'm concerned about since the power beyond kit was put on just a few days ago and I had no trouble prior to that.

I have the exact noise you are talking about. Mine has always had it, so when I took it in for the 50 hour check the I asked the dealer to figure it out. He said it was from the power beyond, and it wouldn't cause harm. I have over 500 hours on it now, it still makes the same noise, the lower the rpm the more it squeals. I haven't noticed any changes in performance that would make me think it was really damaging anything.
Now my steering wheel squeal usually overpowers the 3 pt squeal, anyway.

I ran mine in between rain showers this afternoon. Cycled the 3ph all the way up and down about a dozen times at approx 2000 engine rpms and it only seems to squeal when you approach max up position. However, at engine idle, it squeals far worse in about any position as long as the hitch is going up. It may not hurt anything but the squeal is very loud and just doesn't seem right, especially since during the first 190 hrs everything was OK.

I haven't had any noise at all in the steering but JD may have corrected it (mine is a 2008 model).

Sunnyside,

I have a 4120 and a 448 backhoe. I've had a squeal since day one when raising my three point hitch. On my machine, the noise is caused by the power beyond hose oscillating.

Put your hand on the PB connector hose when you're raising the TPH and see if the vibration is causing the noise. I thought that if I dampened the quick connects in their mounting plate with some rubber spacers (maybe O rings?) that it might take care of it. In my case, it doesn't bother me enough to get into it. Annoying? Yes, but there's nothing wrong with the tractor. Just another of those little things....
YMMV

Regards,

Jon

I have a 3320 that makes the squeal when lifting heavy implements when it almost reaches the top. Also have power beyond. Over the years some of our JD 4430s and 4010s and 3010s would do the same thing. I have never been too concerned about it.

I'm getting the impression the 3ph squeal as described above is not unusual with the Power Beyond feature. Guess I will go out today (finally no rain) and give it a good work out with the rotary cutter.
Many thanks to all for your replys/help.
