After a few hours on my new 4320, I have a couple of noise questions.

First, I get a whining, or squeal, from the steering column when turning. I noticed someone discussing a similar noise in a prior post, but I seem to only get the noise when I have the RPMs over 2000. Assuming it is just noise from the hydraulics, does it make sense to get the "fix." From reading prior posts, I guess the fix is a foam wrap of some sort. For those who have done this, does it really make a difference? At this point, I can live with the noise, just hope it doesn't get louder with more hours.

Second, I have the 400x loader. Today I was moving some gravel, and when I would get a full bucket out of the pile, I would hear a "pop" when raising the bucket with the load. Normal? Is it coming from the springs?

By the way, anybody know the approximate weight of a full bucket of 3/4 minus? I have the 73 inch heavy duty bucket. I have an Anbo grapple rake on order and I'm curious what kind of performance I'm going to get ... the grapple rake alone is almost 800 lbs.

I don't know the fix for the whining steering pump--I think I saw it in an earlier post, but my 4120 has never done it, which suggests there's a way to fix it without sound insulation since my pump has no insulation so far as I've been able to find.

And I haven't heard any sounds from the loader like you describe and I've used it to the max on many occasions. I have heard some creaking when the bucket's near the loader limit.

I can't comment on your third question.

I have a 4720..

I had the same noise problem.

They did the 'foam' or whatever fix inside the steering column. It helped a lot although it still makes a little noise.

At first it wasn't bad and it got worse fairly quickly. I still only have about 100 hours on the thing so it didn't take long.

I would get it fixed, even though it still makes a little noise its not bad and doesn't seem to be getting any worse... ( 50 hours since repair )

It originally got bad enough that I was gettin concerned about hearing damage...

I have not had the noise/bang/pop issue on my 400x loader so I cannot help you there.

Good luck !

Does your gas gauge work..... ? They have a fix for it if you have that problem as well..

Only have about 27 hours on my 4320, but yes noise is worse and the fuel gauge tends to read were it feels it would like that particular day. Dealer is aware and ready to fix when I take it in @ 50 hrs.
Still a great unit!

Best of luck!

I have a 4310 with a 300cx FEL, and I got what sounds like the same "pop" when I was loading up some snow. It happened when I was driving forward into a heavy snowbank as I was curling the bucket. I thought I cracked something metal but after a check on all functions and a little visual insp. all looked and worked OK. Whatever it was was'nt as big a deal as it sounded -I hope. I'm much more curious than worried, I highly doubt I could have been pushing the loader to its max with what I was doing.

Jhortonvt,

Thanks for the post ... at least I know I'm not the only one hearing the mysterious "pop" on the loader. I have to take the tractor back in to the dealer for some install of equipment that is on order, and I will ask about the noise. I'll let you know if I find out any useful info.

I'll also see what they can do about the noise from the steering column.

Hello,

I always wondered if that "creaking" of the loader implies that I'm "hurting" the loader /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I also get that creaking quite often when using the loader to it's max lifting capacity. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Nope Raydor you are not the only one hearing the 'pop' sound. I hear it on my 4300 and am interested in learning what you find out at the dealer.

While we're talking about the 400 or 300 loaders- be sure you are checking your latches like the OM describes. You want to make sure the bolt on the latch is just touching the cast piece. This will help keep the loader from getting loose and causing wear on the mounting frame. If your loader is loose, I could see you getting some noise, but I would think the noise would exist all the time, rather than just when your load is super heavy. This seems obvious, but make sure your loader is aligned on the mounting frame properly. The JD loaders are the easiest to align on the frames, but you definately would get some noise if it wasn't aligned right. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
