I have an older 2005 4320 with about 30 hrs on it. recently, I've had to use 4 wheel drive and noticed that it will go in fine while moving at any time but if I want to take it out of 4 wheel drive, I have to stop, back up and then shift. Is this normal or not. everything works fine, it is just a pain in the butt while working in the fields.

dealer is giving me run around about it saying he is working on it.

thanks

Pretty much that is how it works. There is a slight, but significant, mis-match between the front axle and the back. Reversing unloads the gears allowing it to be released. I don't have the manual handy, but I think I remember this being mentioned.

I have a 4610 with the P/R and I do not have to stop to disengage the front axel. I just hit the switch while driving and you can feel it unlock about 2 seconds later.

Good luck

Ditto my 4710 with PRT. MFWD on/off is a button press at any time.

Strange: ok, so what is the difference between the '20 series and the '10 series? as mentioned.

My old 4300 had the same process. Most (but not all) of the thime you had to slightly back up to release the lever. Since the other two mention a button, is it possible that the solenoid activates and the actual shift waits for a neutral gear mesh (neither driving or driven: not shift position) to actually shift. Both of mine have been mechanical linkages.

The new 20 series have mechanical 4 wheel drive, not the electronic push button like the 10 series. I have a 4720 cab and have to stop to disengage the mfwd. Sometimes I need to reverse a little. But unless I am on pavement or hard surfaces, I very rarely disengage mfwd. It has not been an issue for me.

Hi. I have a 4320 with PRT. ( about 30 hrs as well. ) I've found that I can get it out of MFWD easily if I don't "baby" it. When I first got the tractor I would stop and try to gently push the Knob down. That never seemed to work. It feels like the MFWD can get "stuck on a tooth" and it wont budge. However, now I've found that it's best to keep my hand on the knob and push it down while accelerating or decelerating. Sometimes I may have to switch to neutral or push the clutch (while pushing the knob and while still moving) in order to disengage the MFWD. (Depends on if there is a load on the gears) With some practice you will be able to identify your tractors "in between" sweet spot and it will come out easily for you every time. I haven't tried this in reverse, but I'm sure it works that way too. Good luck.

On the 4710 there is usually a delay of a second or so from the button actuation to when you feel/hear a minute 'bump' as the system comes out of MFWD (rarely feel it go in). Not sure what it is 'waiting for' but you definitely do not have to stop, declutch, or back up. I'm usually shifting in/out while moving straight forward at low speed and the shifts seem pretty consistent.
