I cut grass yesterday with no problems and stopped when the rain started. My wife went back out today and the tractor started, but after moving about 5 feet, there was a "pop" and then it shut off. I am assuming that it was a backfire. Tractor will crank and sounds normal, but won't start. Injection system light goes on like normal. I hear a humming when I turn the key and assume that it is the fuel pump.

The 445 is fuel injection, and I had a similar problem recently with my X485 (also fuel injection).
I suspected fuel related, so put on a new fuel filter and new plugs. Solved the problem.
Mine would start, then stop almost right away. Wait 5 minutes, it would start and run for awhile. But then died while running. Have had no problem since.
But as mentioned, the plastic cam may be a problem (backfire might be a clue) but check out the s/n for age, as it was in the mid-late '90's that the plastic cam was a problem. Also search that item on TBN for some additional info.

It is a 1997 year.
So you just may need to dig into the plastic cam problem. I'd check with my Deere dealer, and see if he will trace that tractor history (which he can do) to find out more info for you.

I have a couple of theories but you should start with the easy stuff first.
1. Fuel pump working - sounds like that isn't an issue as you are hearing the pump working when you are turning the key to "on".
2. Check all fuses - there are several on the computer
3. Check for spark - I doubt you lost both coils at one time but see if you are getting any power to the coils at all.
4. Fuel - even though the fuel pump is running see if you are getting fuel to the manifold. Pull the aircleaner cover off while cranking to see if the injector is injecting fuel.
If everything checks from then pull the valve covers off and see if you getting and valvetrain movement - being a 97 it sounds like you have a cam gear issue. From what I have read 97-98 is the transition from plastic to metal.
If you are cranking the engine and getting no valve movement you found your problem.
Let us know what you find.

Wow! Reading these posts makes me think I'd better change my CAM gear. I have a 1995 425 AWS with 950 hours on it. Still runs like new. I'm the original owner and I do change oil every 25 hours or so. But, it sounds like I'm on borrowed time. I have a service manual. The job looks a little confusing from the photos. But, I guess once I tear into it, it'll be more clear. Just don't want to take it apart in the middle of mowing season and have it down for a long period of time.
Anyone know what other parts I'll need to replace besides just the CAM gear?

You might check, as the plastic cam may have been for just a short period of time..until they found out it didn't hold up. Yours may actually have steel, before the "upgrade" to plastic. Seems the trouble was around the '97 years, but worth checking into.
You are better at the oil changes than I am. I do filter and oil at 50 hours, or thereabouts.

I plan to check with my dealer. But , it sure sounds like I have a plastic CAM given the model year of mine.
Yes, I am festidious about oil changes. Change twice a season: End of June and again in November. It only takes about 5 minutes to change if you have a filter on hand. I put about 50 hours a year on it, depnding on snow fall.
