I am trying to decide which tractor to buy. I will be moving
round bales of hay, baling square bales and bush hogging
with it. Does the 5500 2wd have the shuttle shift like the
4500 4wd model? Also just what is everyone's opinion on
which one to get. I would like to get the 4wd but it is not
neccassary for my use but the shuttle shift is a must have.

Thanks,
Todd

I don't know much about the transmission question, but 4500 seems a little small for doing bale work. If that is your main use I would recommend the bigger tractor. Doesn't the Deere website tell all about the options? A short conversation with a dealer would probably get you enough info to make a decision.

The 5500-2wd does not have the shuttle transmission although it is also available in 4wd w/shuttle trans. The 4500 is a 3-cyl. where the 5500 is a 4-cyl. the 4500 is rated 42-hp. at the engine compared to 54-hp on the 5500. also the loader on the 5500-4wd has a higher lift rating and a 78 inch bucket . The mahindra USA website gives specs on all their models hope this is helpful /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hello outbacktractor,
Does anyone know for sure if the hp ratings on the Mahidra web site and literiture are gross or net?
Thanks
Chipperman

I use my 4500 4WD to square bale, brushog and move round bales. It works very well for me, no problems with power or control, even with a round bale chained to the loader ( the rear tires are loaded with washer fluid). If the shuttle is a must you will have to go with the 4WD 4500/5500/6000 version to get that option. I run a 6 foot hog and I have yet to bog the tractor down and have run through some pretty heavy stuff. I can highly recommend the 4500, but you should find a dealer and try them out for yourself. I was told by a mahindra factory tech that they are rated by net horsepower, The tractors are really strong on a pto dyno-test. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You can't go wrong with the Mahindra's. I have the 6000 4X4. The 4500 4X4 will have shuttle shift and will be plenty for moving rolls and sqaure baling. I loaded all 4 of my tires and I haven't run into anything that I can't lift. Get the QA plate and bale spear and you'll be swapping back and forth between the bucket and spear in seconds. These Mahindras weigh so much more than the other brands that they transfer power really well. Get the 4wd you'll be glad you did. I'll never have another 2wd. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Well I have decided on the 4500 4wd. I am in the process of
getting quotes now. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks
for all the advice everyone.
