4500 draft control

i tried to see if i could get the draft control to work the other day, i have never used one before. i followed the instructions and i must be missing something because it aint doing anything. i was using a box blade with rippers down. lowered box, pulled fwd a bit to dig in, then raised draft control lever..........nothing? am i doing something wrong?

this might just mean that there wasn't enough force to engage it?

Was the draft control lever all the way up?

How hard was the tractor pulling, could you tell if there was a lot of resistance?

dont laugh but the tractor wasnt moving when i raised the handle,,, i was wondering if it had to be, the directions dont say one way or the other. have you ever used it with a box blade?

Yeah I had it on with the box blade. It was more accidental than intentional. I would think with a box blade the only reason you would really need this is if you were going to be in tree roots or some other obstacles. (rock etc). In normal soils the blade should float on its own.

I'm not sure what you are expecting the draft control to do, but what it does is to adjust your lift up and down to maintain traction. It is most effective with implements like a plow.

fish_wisperer, I had a similar reaction the 1st time I tried to use my draft control. My suggestion is to read the directions again. I read them 3 times before I got it. So far I have used it only with my rear 6 way blade. What a difference it makes in my finish grade. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

the only reason i wanted to use it with the box blade was because i had the rippers down, they can really dig in. ill have to experiment some more.

fish_whisperer, I would recommend if the blade is digging in too much to adjust the geometry with the top link instead of using draft control for this. once you get to the proper geometry the box blade should fill and float before digging too deeply. Try extending the top link a bit.

Also, if the rippers are digging too deep maybe raise them a notch? Draft control will raise the 3pt and will probably give uncertain results.
