451 MF 4wd
Hey all, I have just recently joined the form. I have been lurking around for a while. Seems to be a lot of good information here.

I have searched the form for problems with a 451 MF 4wd and not had a whole lot of success. I have found a lot of other good information though. I have recently purchased a 451 MF used of course. Most of my tractor experiance is with older tractors. You know the ones you have to work on to use it and have to work on it to get it back to the barn. I'm pretty happy with the MF so far but it does have a few problems. I'm having problems with the PTO. When I engauge the pto it grinds really bad when the shredder is hooked up. You kinda have to force it to get it to engauge. I can bypass the safty switch with the tractor off, engauge the pto and then start it. When the shredder is not hooked up and nothing connected to the pto it will engauge just fine but I am assuming thats because their is no load on the pto.

I have recently adjusted the clutch peddel. I have long legs and the clutch peddel was about a foot off the platform. I have tried to put the peddel back into the original postion but I am still having the same problem. I adjusted the clutch peddel till it bottoms out with no luck. I have ordered an owners manuel for it, I should be receving it in a week or so. I also noticed before I adjusted the cluch for the first time, that when the clutch was fully depresed it shut down the hyd. on the front loader. Now that I have adjusted the clutch 10 times I can not get the clutch to disingage the loader hyd. anymore.

I am assuming this tractor has a dual stage clutch, not sure yet, I'm still searching. The tractor is a 2005 model with 1400 hours on it. It is a shuttle shift. Besides a few hyd seeps everything else seems to be working fine. I have checked the hyd fluid level and its fine.

Any help with the clutch adjustment or a fix for the pto problem would be graetly appreciated.

Okay, I have talked to the dealer and it seem like I have a two stage clutch which means I have a live pto. The dealer said they want 680.00 to adjust the clutch. I'm going to work on it this week end and see what happens. I am having a hard time finding out information on my tractor. One would think that you could give a serial number and get what ever information you need from that, well thats not so. I am having the same problem with the owners manal. You can pull up an owners manual on a JD no problem but again this not the case on a MF.

I have ordered the owners manual from a dealer and I found a part manual. How benifical is it to have the service manual? The service manual is about 75 bucks. Just wondering if it's worth the money.

Don't remember ever seeing a 451, but I've seen a lot of Masseys, and most of the dual clutches they used are similar. Take the inspection plate off the bottom of the bell housing, and look up in the hole with a small flashlight. See if you can see the release levers and linkage. There should be three levers, and half way between any two should be the adjustment bolt for the PTO pressure plate. There are three bolts evenly spread around the clutch. You may be able to reach the bolts through the hole and adjust them, one at a time, rotating the engine by hand. I think they are 3/8 bolts, with a lock nut. I don't know the exact spec for your clutch, the only Massey book I have is for a 35 and 50, which shows a gap of .090" between the head of the bolt and the plate it contacts when clutch is depressed. The spec sounds familiar, I know I've made that adjustment before on some model or other, and I think it can be done from the bottom. Might be a little time consuming, but beats paying someone to split the tractor. Might want to look at the release levers too. May have a broken pivot pin or the roll pin that retains the pivot pin in place. The pins have been known to work their way out of the bore causing the clutch to not release properly. Any problems there and you will have to split it.
