Received my new 4520 Friday, and after playing around I have a few questions:

Seems to run a little on the warm side. Is this typical or not?

Seat switch, anyone bypass that yet? If so, how did you do it? Can a guy just jump the terminals w/ some wire or is it a major project? Will this also bypass the tractor shutting off w/ PTO engaged when getting off the seat?

Gotta say these tractors are sweet. Going from a Farmall Model M to a 4520, oh what a difference. Don't know how I made it so long w/o all the creature comforts. First JD compact tractor I have ran, and must say I am impressed.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

How warm is it running as a percentage of the scale? ¼? ½? ¾?
If ½ scale or less, you're worrying about nothing. Just keep an eye on the gage if you're going to field mow or cut. Keep the grill and radiator screens clear.

The reason I responded to this post is because of your question:
"Seat switch, anyone bypass that yet? If so, how did you do it? Can a guy just jump the terminals w/ some wire or is it a major project? Will this also bypass the tractor shutting off w/ PTO engaged when getting off the seat?"
Read your manual!
There is a specific process (in the manual) to run the PTO with the operator off the seat so there is no reason to bypass the seat switch, is there?

If your intent is to get off the tractor while a driven implement (rotary cutter, for example) is spinning...well, you might want to rethink that practice. If it's a driven implement of an agricultural nature that would require you to leave the seat the tractor...I suggest you discuss this with the dealer.

My 4520 runs just over halfway up the temperature gauge. This is apparently the normal range according to both my dealer and a previous thread of Twenty Series owners on TBN. Doesn't matter if I'm plowing snow in February or chipping branches in August all day long -- the needle gets up to that point and stays there.

Roy is correct in saying there is absolutely no need to bypass the safety switch in the seat. If you put the emergency brake on and set the transmission in neutral and don't engage the PTO until you are already off the seat, then it runs just fine. If you engage the PTO while sitting, and then get off the seat, it will stop.

Rhomium: I put a pushbutton bypass on the seat switch. There are times when I need to stand up to see, but I don't want to lose the safety action should the tractor dump. I push the switch before I get up, if I let go the tractor stops. So the normal PTO safety still works as designed. I used a relay at the seat platform, with the pushbutton on the dash.

Hope you enjoy your tractor. I used mine this weekend to dig out around some 75' sequioa trees then pull them over.

Have fun.

Roy: I did read the manual. I don't want the switch disconnected just to make a stationary power source. This tractor is replacing my old one, which I spray about 4000 acres of field borders with, and I need to stand up a lot of the time going thru tall grass to make sure I don't hit anything. Kind of hard to do that when the tractor shuts off.

Perhaps before dispensing w/ giant font, you could have just asked what I intend to do with it.

Thanks for the replies.
