455 JD PTO will not engage after being reconnected

I took on the project (mistake?) of replacing a worn out belt on my 455 John Deere tractor mower deck. After much effort I managed to re-install the deck after installing the belt. I went to run it for a test mow and the PTO will not engage. When I pull up the yellow knob, nothing happens except the PTO light come on on the dash. What did I do?

if you unplugged clutch ,did you plug it back up, if not may have knocked it loose

Removing and re-attaching the deck from the 455 should not affect the PTO clutch. Can you describe how you went about doing this. Maybe we can pinpoint the problem.

Changing out the worn belt and putting on a new one is a separate task and also should not involve the PTO clutch.

Check to be sure you got the PTO shaft locked on . I have occasionally thought it was locked on when it has not.

couch-man... you may have just nailed the problem.. hope that abbydmd discovers her problem.

A trick I learned on putting the drive shaft on is to reach in from the rear (on non-AWS tractors) of the tranny to grab the knuckle and slide it onto the PTO splined stub. Much easier than trying to reach in from the side, as arm and hand strength seem to be much better.
