I have a 455 (and a 2210) my 455 just started problems with the mower deck. It will shut off by itself and then you can restart it. I do not have a reverse cut off switch on mine..it has always mowed in reverse.....put on a new pto switch and a new brake switch. Still have the problem. Anybody got any ideas?

Does it have a switch that cuts the deck off if you get off the seat? Check that switch if it does.

Mine does the same thing. I found that it does it when I am low on fuel for some reason. I try and top off the fuel before every mow and it hasn't been a problem since then.

arnie47,

I had a 445 and found that slight leaning around trees would shut the deck off. Seems that the seat would not lay quit flat on the seat suspension bracket and the switch would let go. I ended up adding some self-stick plastic pads to the bottom of the seat, just above the switch plunger and that fixed things right up. May be you have experinced some wear in you seat mechanism and the seat switch is not held down properly. Or, the switch is going bad.

Ditto the check the seat switch advice. I too had this problem on my 425 and ultimately ended up jumping out the switch (not the recommended solution, but it did work). Now if I could figure out how to make the seat switch a little less sensitive on my 2210...

One more thing to check out. I believe there is a pto cutoff switch that is tied in with the temperature sensors near the water pump. If you are overheating, that sensor will shut the PTO off. I think there are 2 separate sensors, one for the pto, and one for the overheat light, so if one is bad it could be tripping your pto. Make sure all of your screens and radiator are cleaned out and temp is normal.
and check the seat switch like others have said.

I used to have a 445 and the same thing happened to me. I solved it by jumping out the seat safety switch.

Cowboydoc,
Our 455 will continue to cut grass until the diesel is GONE. I wouldn't mind at all if the deck did disengage when fuel was low to remind me to fuel up! The fuel gage never has been accurate and I have run out of fuel a time or two.
I'll second or third the advise to check the seat switch and the cut-off related to overheating though!

Mine will cut until it runs out of diesel too. When it's low though is when it will start shutting off periodically. May just be a coincidence.

replaced both swiches, pto and brake.have not looked into the heat sensor switsh, but the screen is clean. could it be the computer board? The mainboard that controls everything? It acts like a loose wire, after shuting down the mower, you can restart it most of the time. There is a red light on the main board, if the red light goes out the mower deck shuts off. any and all help appreciated. Thanks to all.
