John Deere 455
Recently purchased a 455 garden tractor. I have not been able to find the serial number anywhere. I do see a sticker on the radiator that is dated 1999. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

It's on a sticker on the lower frame rail (can't remember if it is the right or left without running to the barn).

I've looked on the frame and can't find anything. I actually have the whole back end off as well as the tunnel so I can repaint. No sign of a serial number anywhere. I have a clear shot of the frame all the way around. It must not be a plate that's rivited to the frame ?

I went out and looked again. Looks like it was below the motor mount on the right side. I can just see a corner piece of it ... Can I use the engine serial number to figure it out?

I own the same tractor, and think it is great. Our propert is 2.2 acres. The only gripe I got is it is very difficult to mow in a strait line with it due to the hydralic steering setup. I don,t know if I,m to particular, or if others have the same problem. I borrowed my nephews Kubota Bx 23, and it cuts strait. I have replaced the steering cylinder on mine, but it didn,t help. I also have the 47 " 2 stage snowblower for it, and it works awesome. With the hydro tranny, it will clear any amount of snow mother nature decides to dump in our 100' driveway. I also have a cab for it, which keeps the worst of the wind and blowing snow off. Mine is a 95 and has about 3200 hours, and still purrs like a kitten. I put new glow plugs in it last fall, and it starts very quik, both summer and in our Ontario, Canada winters. I am keeping an eye out for a newer, cleaner one, with low hours just to upgrade to a 2002 or 2003, but they are very rare up this way. Best garden tractor I,ve owned, by far !!!

???
I have the 455 (and the 425 and X485) and find no problem whatsoever making straight lines mowing. I pick a spot across the large lawn and aim for it. I make straight mow lines for up to 600 feet no problem. And I have the AWS system on all the tractors.
But like driving a car straight down the road, one can't look down at the point just over the hood. Have to keep looking a ways out.
Maybe a bad steering cylinder will cause a problem.

Don,t get me wrong, I,m not trying to discourage the OP from buying one of these tractors, cause I do think they are awesome. I have replaced the steering cylinder on mine, and it didn,t make a difference. Is there a bleeding air process you have to go thru when you instal a new cylinder to get all the air out of the lines ? Maybe I missed that part of the installation instructions.

So it wanders while holding the steering wheel still? Or it is slow to respond to the steering wheel movement?
Maybe air, or maybe in the valve contro in the steering wheel parts. ?? I'd think air would be pushed out when the cylinder is cycled to each end.

Here is a page from the tech manual index, that might lead to tracking the problem. Seems to be some tests that can be done. Do you have the tech manual?

I try and hold the steering wheel locked into the strait position, and there seems to be slop between the steering wheel and the linkage or hydralics between the steering wheel and the front wheels.

I also enjoy my 455 AWS. In the two years I've owned this '99 with 1,000 hours I rebuilt the 60" deck, which I planned to do, replaced the bearings in the 20 amp alternator and the diff lock seal on the tranaxle. Both of these repairs were not planned but required. I have heard of others replacing the seal but I didn't find any prior experiences with the alternator bearings. That was an easy repair and O'Reilly Auto had the replacements in stock.

Best regards,
