I have a new 4115 with the 46 hoe with a 20 inch bucket. Yes the stabilizer arms will lift the tractor, but when it comes to digging the machine comes up on relief valve, and barely scratches surface. Another issue is with power steering, this doesn't matter if FEL and/or BH are attached or not, it won't turn until you pish one of the directional (fwd/Rev) foot pedals? I'd appreciate any and all expierences with the 46 Backhoe you might have had, pleased or dis-pleased.
Thank You,
Bill

What RPMs are you running during the times you have problems?

to me it sounds as if your BH bucket is to big. i have a 13" bucket and i dig hard clay type soil, sometimes it is too much. i have run commercial backhoes that have trouble with 24" buckets, and the 4115 is about 1/5th the power.

as for the steering, it is very hard on the machine to turn the wheels really hard while not moving. mine does the same as yours, so i dont do that. i would rather have the pressure relief kick in and it not turn than chance breaking a tie rod or spindle.

you are likely still in the learning curve for this machine. it takes time to learn all of the tricks for each machine you run.

it sounds like you want your extremely small machine to do the work of a much larger machine, which it simply can not do.

I usually run RPM's about 2400.

Hi Roccon,
Appreciate your reply VERY much. Yes I am still in the learning curve on this tractor, I traded in a 755 which operated a little differently, and even though I have a great deal of experience with Industrial Loaders and BullDozers, this is my first with a Backhoe.
The problem, (SURPRISE) I got with the steering happened when the machine was backed up on a bank, I still cannot get used to the start-up procedure, I popped it in neutral, started the machine, released the parking brake, and took off rolling for a head on collision with a tree in my front yard (brakes stopped it, but it would not steer). The old 755, was always left in LOW range (don't think it was ever in Neutral) and it started and you instantly had the holding power of the Hydrostat or if you pushed one of the directional foot pedals, you could go Fwd or reverse. I really do not see a need for the neutral interlock.
I will see if I can I can get the dealer to swap out the 20" bucket for a 13", I have clay/shale here, I am on top of a hill.
Thanks again,
Bill

V8DAK ,

So when are you going to let the dealer evaluate the issue at hand? I say this because there appears to be a problem, and it should involve the dealer to find and fix it....

Ironically my dealer contacted me and said there might a 46BH being returned, and that it might be available to me....I did think of you actually /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif could it be related?

Keep us posted...I would certainly like to hear of a happy ending, this is the first negative post regarding the BH I have seen...

V8DAK,

Having had a 755 also, I know the differences between the tractors today are huge. Just the ability to jump off the tractor and do what you needed to with the 755 vs the newer ones where you have to set the parking brake and then put the tractor into neutral is a royal pain-in-the-butt. I understand the need for safety, but some of this stuff just seems like a dunderhead approach towards a worthy goal. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It's been at the dealer since 5/9, went up yesterday 5/16 to see how they are doing (my grass getting tall). They have fixed all the hydraulic leaks and were planning on running a hydraulic flow test, they were also thinking of doing the 50hr service @22 hours in case It has a restricted filter. Will get back to you when I know more.
Regards,
Bill

I agree. I really love the neutral and parking brake starting interlocks. I think mine will get modified (at least the neutal one).

V8DAK,

I also agree. Relying, solely, on the parking brake to keep you in place doesn't give me a "warm and fuzzy" feeling when I step off, especially on an incline. Ofcourse, I am rather guilty of starting, putting in gear, and moving a ways before I realize I still have the parking brake on (guess I need the tech manual to figure out how to adjust the parking brake, due to my mis-use).

As for the 46's digging power, I also went with the 13" bucket, at the dealers recommendation. They said that it was the best match as anything smaller takes too much time to move anything and anything bigger would overload the 46's capacity [they are intimate with this silty/clay/rocky soil up here]. I have been very pleased with the BH/Bucket match. Ofcourse, there are many times when an Excavator would have been the proper tool but I don't think I can sell that one to my CFO :).

I think you'll be much happier with the smaller bucket.

Tom
