Backhoe 46 Backhoe & 4115 hydraulic power?

Hi,

I had a 4100 and cannot speak to your BH problems, but I might be able to shed some light on your power steering issue. I found that in 4wd, I had difficulty turning the steering wheel while stopped. 2wd, no problem. If you think about it, it makes sense. In 4wd, you are asking that small cylinder to drag the 2 front tires (if you are stopped).

I couldn't remember, for sure, as I've noticed easy, some times, and hard others. So I tried the steering last night. I found the same.... easy in 2 wheel at dead stop, hard in 4 wheel... It really needs to be moving at least a little to turn in 4 wheel. If you find it won't turn fairly easily in 2 wheel, there's a problem. [Ofcourse, a full FEL and the tire style will effect that "ease"]

( It's been at the dealer since 5/9, went up yesterday 5/16 to see how they are doing (my grass getting tall). They have fixed all the hydraulic leaks and were planning on running a hydraulic flow test, they were also thinking of doing the 50hr service @22 hours in case It has a restricted filter. Will get back to you when I know more.

Bill )

The dealer delivered the machine 5/18/05. I was not at home so I didn't get to talk to driver. Looks like all leaks were fixed, when I was at dealers, they said they were going to change the hydrostat filter. I don't know if that was done or not as I have not seen the "paper-work". They swaped out the 20" bucket for a 13" as a couple of you fellas recommended that size. Wife an I went out this past Saturday and bought TREES....I have been digging holes for them, probably over doing it, but the soil up here is the beautiful rock-laden Yellow clay, and with our lack of rain, it is much like concrete. The machine dug them, not easily, but I know the 20" bucket wouldn't have worked at all, I an even considering the next smaller bucket. So far, I am overall pretty pleased with the machine. Even though I don't know for sure what was done at dealers, I feel something was in the filter or a relief valve and has passed, cause it works differently now! (Just a note- These posts can get mis-interpeted, I am in no way trying to spread negative information about my Machine, John Deere, or my Dealer). Many thanks to ALL of you that replied and suggested the smaller bucket, without that kind of feedback, this forum would be useless. Thanks All,
Bill

i've been busy busy busy lately, so i havent been on much. glad to hear you are liking your BH better with the smaller bucket. i still love mine! LOL! my PHD is, well, another story. i have dug a few nice holes with it, in topsoil, but thats about it. i have found that even the smallest of rocks (4") will snap my shear bolt. its a royal PITA in anything other than rockless topsoil.

i bid a job for a contractor friend of mine, for deck posts on a new house he was building. code called for 36" depth. after 8 hours of trying to get through the rocky soil, and 2 trips to the hardware store for about 15 shear bolts, i called a local landscaper to come dig the 6 holes with his cat skid steer. it took him less than 5 minutes to dig the 6 holes. needless to say, for my first "commercial" tractor job, i felt like a complete jerk for not getting the job done. i have not bid any post hole jobs since. only backhoe and loader jobs.
