Has anyone noticed that the legs on the backhoe don't stay up when using the tractor or don't keep down pressure when using the hoe. I have just wondering if its a 46 backhoe thing or mine needs some attention. Oh yeah tractor has 50 hours

That is normal leak down. Every day that I start my tractor, I walk to the back and raise the outriggers and the bucket curl. Usually it is good for the day and I might see 1 or 2 inches of leak down for the day.

It is very important that you keep the travel pins in when the backhoe is not in operation. Several people have had unnoticed leak down and their backhoe hit something at high speed resulting in bent hydraulic pistons.

That does happen on my JD #7 backhoe. I chain the out riggers in the up position when not using the backhoe.:)

Hi All,

I've been meaning to pose the same question. It is odd to me that the loader will stay right in place for days but all of the cylinders on the backhoe let go in no time.

I've been using a couple of bungies to help but been meaning to make a braided steel one when the time allows.

I don't know if the loader leaks down, I use it all the time and when I park I always drop it down on the ground for safety.

I've had the same issue with the hydraulic cylinders on all the compacts I've owned. My dealer said its normal and is really due to the overall quality and precision of the control valves used in smaller tractors. He said the valves that control the hydraulic cylinders in large tractors and construction equipment do not leak down because they are built to a much higher standard. I don't think there's anything we can do about on our compacts.

My stabalizer legs leak down also....I ended up making up keeper chains for them. Used dog leash type chain with S hooks on the ends...drilled a hole on the end of the legs for the hook. Now I don't have to tend with the drooping legs blocking the garage bay. My FEL leaks down also....I have pallet forks that I have a decked pallet that I use for an elevated work platform. I learned real fast to not leave it elevated overnight...the stuff I was working on ended up spilled onto the floor come morning.

I string a Bungie between my outriggers when they are up and not being used. It works well and the weight doesn't overcome the bungie. My loader bucket will drop in no time. Even while running the tractor, I notice that it will drop a little over time. It is interesting. My old Ford 1710 that I have, you can leave the FEL bucket up and come back a week later and it is still in the same position. Yet I normally lower when parked but have left it up at times while parked over another implement.
I wouldn't get too concerned with the leak down and just prepare for it. The enjoyment I get out of my 2520 and 46 backhoe is worth these little quirks. :)

I have heard the same thing. I also use bungee cords on my stabilizers when not is use. Funny thing is my 1988 JD650 was not NEAR as bad as my 2008 JD2320.
