The JD website lists the MX7 at $3100 and the 72" mid mount mower at $2785. I don't know if these prices include the PTO shaft. Neither of these boast the 90" cutting width of the 390 flail mower either. I'm happy with it. I don't think that a MMM or other finish mower would last long in my somewhat rocky meadow anyway. There was a multi-month wait for the flail mower and the dealer lent me a rotary cutter while I waited for the flail mower. I mowed the meadow once and replaced at least five shear bolts. This experience reinforced the benefit of the flail mower for my situation.

I have driven all over my property with my R1s and they definitely leave tread marks in the ground most places and most of the time. Here in N Idaho the climate is pretty wet and that is undoubtedly a factor. There are times of the year that the tires don't leave marks but these are fairly limited.

BTW tire width has no relationship to footprint size. Footprint size is solely determined by air pressure and sidewall stiffness

I belive that's only going to be true of a slick. A more aggresive tread tire is going to focus that pressure into the pattern. For an extreme example think of a sheepsfoot roller (compactor). You can drive a 5000 series across a putting green with the right tires (galaxy turf). The wider R1's are all still R1, true, but that relationship of ground pressure area (as opposed to carcase bearing area) to absolute weight will climb with the wider tire (sidewall plys being assumed equal). You will get a wider and shorter pattern, and with R1's I believe the point of the wider tire is to increase the area of tread block making contact at any one time, at the expense of 'diggin' ability.

In any case, as you mentioned, local ground/moisture conditions probably make more difference than what might exist between subtle tire size variation.

You are right. I was considering the "footprint" to be the total area not just the combined area of the individual treads.

Waldo,
Just wanted to know how you like your X595SE. I am thinking of purchasing one. How is the FEL, especially the tiller, and the turning radius of the tractor. We have a lot of trees and lots of hills.

Thanks,
Jackie
