I want to change the rear axle oil, however the plug has a 1/2" square hole in it that is rounded out and only about 2 threads of the plug sticking out from the axle housing.

How do I get it out? I don't think I can drill it because I couldn't keep the drill cool. I also don't beleive I could weld anything on it.

Do you think I could weld on it without starting the tractor on fire? Or should I just pump the oil out from the fill hole?

Yes, you can weld on it without fire. If it were me, I'd stick a piece of cold roll in the rounded out hole and weld it up. Then use a pipe wrench to loosed the plug.

People tend to get carried away with these plugs. When you put the new plug in apply some thread tape and just tighten it slightly past snug.

When you weld to the plug, attach your ground to the metal bar and not to the tractor, you don't want the weld current going through the housing to the plug.

I've ground down an easy out and that's worked fine.
