I am having trouble with my 4610 starting consitently. I used it all morning shutting it down periodically. Parked for about 2 hours and I got lights on the instrument panel but it would not start. I have replaced the starter switch. I noticed the starter cable is bad. I priced one from Ford and they want $70.00. What is so special about this cable? Can I just get one from the autoparts store? I can't find anything on the gauge of the cable and am not sure the cables on the tractor are the correct size as I purchased it used.

I still haven't checked the neutral safety switch which I understand could be sticking.

As a side note, when I was changing the fuel filters, I could not turn the starter off with the key, so it just cranked until it wanted to stop. I'd say 30 -40 seconds each time.

I have to wiggle the range shifter while turning the key every time I start mine. Those safetly switches are known to be a problem.

If the tractor continues to crank without the key being turned, there's a good chance that your solenoid is sticking. They can "weld" themselves, resulting in what you described. Usually the battery gets VERY hot as a result. I have had to run for wrenches to disconnect a smoking battery on more than one occation because of a stuck solenoid.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking the solenoid also. And as for startinging it seems I have to have both selectors in neutral and the clutch in to even have a chance. Just kind of frustrating.

OK Does anyone know how to get the starter off? I can't seem to get a wrench or a socket on the bolt on the inside. The one that would be right between the block and the starter.

On our 3910, which should be about the same, I used a 1/4" drive ratchet and two extensions to reach the whole length of the starter, and then had no problem.

Thanks. I was wondering if 1/4 drive would turn it. I'll give it a try
