Ford New Holland 4630
Just bought a 1998 4630 from a reseller. It appears to have been a state owner tractor so I have no history to go on.

The PTO starts and stops with the hand lever, but doesn't stop with the clutch depressed all the way down. Also when engaging the PTO with a bush hog attached it seems to start very abruptly, even with low rpm and clutch completely depressed.

The clutch lever pivot shaft never moves. Does the arm going from this shaft to the rear end play a part in disengaging the PTO?

I have ordered a service manual but not received it yet.

Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

I found a thread titled 3910 Brutal PTO Engagement from 2008.

According to this thread, I believe I have an Independent PTO and the clutch pedal has no effect on the PTO.

Also, according to this thread, there isn't a real smooth way of engaging the PTO. You have to lower the RPM as low as possible without killing the implement and then learn to "feather" the PTO lever to the right spot and then quickly engage.

Would have thought there would have been a smooth way of engaging...

1) Any suggestions for smooth engagement?

2) Also, so what is the lever going from the clutch pivot shaft back to the rear end? I haven't seen it move yet.

Thanks for any and all help.

ok, finally figured out question 2) above: Its the brake shaft. I was focused on how it was related to the clutch.

So, still looking for advise on the smooth engagement...don't want to tear anything up...

The 3910 thread likely contains all the info pertinent to your 4630. THere is no new info on that topic.

My 3910 has the independent PTO. I always engage it at idle by just moving it out of the lock-slot a little. When it connects, there's only a slight knock from the implements taking up wear in the PTO shaft train. Then I move the lever all the way engaged and power up. It's supposed to be hydraulic clutch powered so in theory, it could be engaged at any speed but my equipment has too much slop and don't want to risk damage. When disengaged, the clutches release and act as a brake on the PTO train. If yours doesn't do that then I suspect the PTO clutch disks are worn.

My 1986 3910 was a county owned tractor but it was maintained very well mechanically. When I bought it, it had many new parts including a cav pump, alternator, injectors, starter and steering valve. I think the engine may have been overhauled too. About the only items not falling into the "good as new" category were the paint, dash wiring/gauges and tires. But at $2800, I feel it was a bargain. I use one of the original auction photos as my avatar picture. That was about eight or so years ago. And it's still running strong and starts right up.

Ok. Thanks for the input. I tried today and idled down slower and it sounded better. I think the bush hog in general has a loud start up.
