TBNers,

Does anyone know the difference between the standard R-1 bar tires (rear 13.6-28;front 8-16) and the optional R-1 bar tires (rear 16.9-24;front 8-16) for the JD4710 apart from small difference in price that JD quotes on their configurator? Are the optional R-1's in the rear bigger, thicker, additional tread plys, etc? What advantage would they have over standard R-1s and under what circumstances? Are they worth the few extra $ss? Thanks.

Regards,

Right off the bat, the optional tires give you a lower "profile" in turn with a slightly lower center of gravity... and also a "wider" footprint...

Normally, you'll go "lower" for side-hilling and tippy terrain... more stable...

Since the front tires are the same in either package I am willing to bet that the rears are the same diameter as each other, just different width. If the diameter were different then the gears in the tractor would have to be changed in order to maintain the right lead/lag ratio between the front and rear wheels (assuming we are talking 4wd of course). The 16.9-24 tires must have a higher sidewall than the 13.6-28s in order to make up for the smaller rim diameter. Looking at the JD configurator I also notice that the 16.9-24s are 6 ply tires as opposed to the 4 ply 13.6-28s. I would personally go for the wider tires myself in order to improve flotation on soft ground and get a tougher tire. Well worth the $128 price difference to me.

Thanks John and MJB. I was thinking likewise. With John's "wider footprint" I figure I'd have better traction in the boggy, swampy areas I need to work on.

You're ok as long as you maintain a "lead" ratio and you always will when you reduce the rears... [as in this case]

Optimum lead is somewhere around 2 to 5%...

It is lower, but very slight...
