4720 HP

I currently have a Case Farmall 45 with 45 hp. I like that size tractor but would like to upgrade in hp. I am looking at a JD 4720. Would like to stay away from the new ones with all the pollution crap on them. I found a nice one with low hours but it is a 2007 model with with 58hp. The 2009 and up models were rated at 66 hp. Looking at specs it is the same motor. Was wondering if something could be done to the older models to make the 66hp of the newer models. Was also wondering if anyone has used both and if there is a noticeable difference in power? Thanks for any help

Looking at the specs on tractor data it says the 58 HP version has more torque than the 66 HP engine. 155 lb-ft @ 1440 RPM vs 141 lb-ft @ 1550 RPM.

I would rather have more torque at a lower RPM if I were comparing power.

It's an assumption on my part that they tweaked the fuel pressure or timing or turbo boost (if equipped) or some other minor thing to boost the power. If it's an off warranty machine the local JD shop mechanic could probably do those adjustments for you?

It's not always a good thing to boost hp, just because the next size up model, "looks" like the exact same thing.

I have two tractors that I believe are the same age, they appear to be exactly the same except for tire size and pump setting, to get one of them 10 more hp. I was told they were exactly the same except tires and pump setting by the dealer, that I know is very knowledgeable on those tractors.

But in checking that out for myself, the 10 extra horses also gets you a bigger clutch ect... AND who knows what else, that you "can't" see??

BTW, that extra 10hp is VERY noticeable in use!!

Nebraska test shows:

141lb.-ft @ 1550 rpm
171lb.-ft. @ 1453 rpm (S/N 670001 and higher)

My 9540 Kubota has a smaller sister, 8540. Same tractor, can be equipped with same tires. Just 10HP difference. Yep, 11% HP increase is definitely noticeable.

How do you know it's the same tractor??

Did you go through the parts list and see if the part numbers for the entire drive line match?? That's how I found the differences between my two tractors even though they "look" the same on the outside...
