Just bought me an 09 4720 tractor. What a bad ***** machine:). Can ya'll tell me on the 3rd scv (or rear remote) there is a detented position on the forward position on the lever. It does not just hold the valve open like you might expect it to. The manuel says it is a float position and "it removes pressure in both connector lines and allows fluid to flow back and forth between the lines". How is this different than leaving the lever in the spring loaded center position? Also on the loader(400CX) joy stick, there is a 3 position lever right below it. Top position is unlock, bottom is lock, (pretty easy so far) but the center position is "regenerate". Can ya'll tell me what that is or does?:confused2:

Float is used when you want an implement to follow ground contours. The lift cylinder will have no effect, it will extend and retact as the implement follows the ground.
Float is also used with a hydraulic motor. Put the valve in float. Connect the hydraulic motor, move the lever from float to power the hydraulic motor. Return to float to shutdown the hydraulic motor. This protects the motors seals from over pressure were you to shut it down by moving the valve to the center position.
Leaving the valve in the center postion holds a cylinder where ever you positioned it. Say you extended it 3/4 of it's stroke then move the lever to center position, the cylinder will stay at 3/4 of it's stroke. Barring any internal leakage in either the cylinder or valve.
Regenerate is use for "fast dump of the bucket of a loader. It sends hydraulic oilo both sides of the curl/dump cylinders. Since the head end of the cylinders have more area they cylinders dump. This prevents the weight of the bucket from dumping before the head end of the cylinders can fill with hydrualic oil.

Thanx Zebra 5, the float position makes sense now that I think about it. It would be just like float on the loader joystick. On the regen. feature I'm still a little confused:confused: on what you are trying to tell me. Can you elaborate a little more?

Regen is not an easy concept to explain or grasp.

If you were to dump a heavy load not using regen, the bucket could dump faster than the oil fills the dump side of the cylinder, leaving an air pocket. The bucket will also be "floppy" when curling back it will also be floppy because of this air pocket. Regen makes the bucket operate smoothly. Oil is sent to both sides of the cylinder. The dump side has more area, plus the weight of the bucket and it's load, so dump is what the bucket does. How this is faster I can't explain , but it is.

I am sure others here can explain it better than me :D

The lock feature on your joystick may only lock out regen and not all joystick functions. Something you can easily check.

Thanx again there Z5, so in otherwords, use the regen feature when dumping heavy loads and regular mode when dumping lighter loads. Got it! PS: not even my local JD dealers service dept. could even answer these questions sad but true.:ashamed:

Congrats on the machine.

A couplle of pointers on the CX laoder.
If you have and use pallet forks for materials, either lock-out or be real careful with the regen function.

If/ When you dismount the loader a bucket full of rock will help. Remember you must feather the dump control while you dismount/ mount the loader. The auto-leveling feature of the 400CX will cause issues if you don't.

Keep the latch nuts snug per the book. I prefer to keep them tight and back them off if I want to dismount the loader.

Don't underestimate the amount of ballast you need. I have picked up 2700+ pound concrete culverts with mine and loaded tires and the 448 backhoe was marginal on ballast.

have fun
