48\" bushhog on a bx1800

my manual says use a 42" but 48" is a lot cheeper (I guess they make more of them)
So will 6" more be a big deal?

I think you will be fine with a 48" cutter. We used to run a 48" unit on a MF 1010 (13 PTO hp) with decent results. It was slow when we used it on extremly thick growth, but it did fine for the maintenence of the fields after we cut the thick stuff the first time.

With Dennis coming you might not need to worry about the lawn for a bit. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: 48\" bushhog on a bx1800

Keep in mind that brush hogs (Bush Hog is a manufacturer while brush hog is a synonym for rough cutter/rotary cutter) come in light duty, medium duty, and heavy duty, regardless of size. I run a 40" Gearmore heavy duty brush hog on my BX2200. The body is 42" wide, the same as the tractor, which makes maneuvering between trees easier. I can cut stands of saplings close to 2" thick without loss of rpm. Light duty models are primarily for tall grass and weeds, but not saplings. Heavy duty will take weeds and saplings. Medium duty is for weeds and very small saplings.

The BX1800 has less hp than the BX2200 and you are considering a rough cutter larger than I have. My guess is that you would do o.k. cutting only pasture grass and weeds. From my own experience, I would be hesitant to offer any guarantee that you could cut saplings with this combination.

Gearmore makes this 40" hd model along with a md 48" model. Quite a few manufacturers make 48" models. The smallest I know of are 36" models by Howse; one is ld and another is md.

Good luck with your choice.

Re: 48\" bushhog on a bx1800

I was thinking of something "cheep" like a fram-pro or ????
Seeing how the BX has a soft underside with the fan and all I am not sure I would want to run it over more than tall weeds and pature grass anyhow

oh yea and Dennis is no problem....I leave for two week vacation Friday night to NC....how is that for planing?

Re: 48\" bushhog on a bx1800

I bought a King Kutter 48" cutter for my B7100 (16hp, 13pto) and I never had any trouble with it even cutting up to 1 1/2 inch brush. One thing to look at when buying a cutter will be the overall length. The local dealership put a 48" woods cutter behind a BX2230 and it was as long as the tractor. The King Kutter appeared to be considerably shorter and "looked" better behind it.The extended overall length would make it hard to cross a ditch or any low spot without hanging the tractor up on the implement. Just something to consider before purchasing.
