48\" PT Finish Mower for sale

Hi fellow PT'ers,

FYI, I have just listed my 2004 PT 48" finish mower on TBN Classifieds as well as the PT website (w/pics there).

We have recently acquired a parcel of land adjacent to ours, so my mowing chores have increased (doubled, really). Unfortunately, the good Ms. tracdoc wasn't favorably disposed at the moment to me getting an 1845 (I think I need to apply some of Bob Skurka's methodologies here---jewelry won't do it, but goodies for her race car might work /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

I'm looking to get a 60" finish mower, and that's the reason I'm selling the 48". Details are on the Classifieds. Thanks...

Have you thought about adding a pull behind unit instead of getting the 60" deck for out front? Adding a 5' pull behind + running your 48" could get you about 8.5 feet of cut when allowing for overlap.

Thanks much for the suggestion, MR. I was thinking along those lines, too.

I had a demo of the Acrease mower last week. It's engineered and built very, very well, w/ electric start, centrifugal clutch, spin-off oil filter, etc. What put the kabbash on it for me is that it's a whole lot more than I want to spend for a single-tasker: $2,100 base for the mid-level homeowner unit, plus hitch & tax = ~$2,500 out-the-door. [The non electric start unit w/ manual clutch and no oil filter is only $100 cheaper]. I have not have an opportunity to try the less costly Swisher, nor have I seen any used Acreases.

On performance, it cuts beautifully, as well it should. Direct side discharge w/o any bogging in tall stuff. Maybe there's a learning curve or I'm just a klutz, but IMHO, I found it awkward to maneuver that unit around trees, beds and other obstacles, especially if I needed to go in reverse--the double articulation. May be better towed with an ATV or conventional UT? The high dB of 2 engines was rattling even w/ earmuffs on, although I suppose I could get used to that.

Re: 48\" PT Finish Mower for sale

I can second your impression of the tow behind mower. I bought a 60" Swisher tow behind and while I am quite happy with its cut and its operation, having the two engines running together is quite loud. I use ear plugs because the noise from the two engines leaves my ears ringing after several hours of mowing.

I will probably switch in the future to the PT mower, primarily for this reason. In addition, a front mounted mower would be easier to use since you don't have to constantly look over your shoulder at the trail mower and you can manuever it easily.

Having a tandem front and back would be cool except that you still have to deal with the noise level. Also, I don't think I'd want to do that unless it was in a wide open field with no obstacles. Trying to keep track of a front and a rear mower would probably drive me crazy.

As far as trying to move in reverse, the double articulation gets me too. I still haven't trained my brain to work the problem properly.
