John Deere 4120
Hello,

In a perfect world my new John Deere 4120 will be delivered this week with some attachments. Anyhow, I won't lie, I'm upgrading from a 1949 JD Model M to the JD 4120 so I know there is going to be a significant learning curve.

So my question is how hard is it going to be to remove the 485 backhoe and then reinstall the 3 point hitch system for the other attachments.

ANY HELP/TIPS/ and even PHOTOGRAPHS would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks,
Steve

Congrats on the new JD.
Assuming your Tractor / BH is just larger & procedure is same / very similar, I'd estimate 10 minutes or less to remove the BH and 10 minutes or so for the 3PH gear. Make sure the Rockshaft arms lift the BH high enough to remove the L-Pins. Watch the JD video and if yours doesn't work the same insist the JD Store make the necessary adjustments.

I rarely remove my BH, so it's almost a new learning experience each time. There is nothing hard about the procedure - it just takes a few minutes and must follow a certain sequence. It's a lot easier than to R&R a MMM.

With practice, you can have the backhoe on or off in 2 minutes max (generally much less). It will take longer to install/uninstall the hitch parts.

The first few times you will take a little longer but with practice two minutes, the 3 pt hitch arms take a little longer because the need for two 1/2" wrenches for the pins.Congrats on the hoe. I just turned 300 hrs since march and most of it was digging time, with my 485.

Thanks for all the replies ! I really appreciate them. Sounds like it should be pretty easy once I get the hand of it.

Any little tips or common mistakes I should know about?

Also, I was curious if the pins/brackets/etc. get worn with use and if that makes it harder to put the backhoe on and off ?

Thanks again,
Steve

I would suggest having the dealer do it with you--either at your place or in the shop before delivery--so you can watch how it is done, and check the alignment of the rockshaft plates as mentioned above as a side benefit. A nice level surface goes a long way--but you can always use the stabilizers to jiggle things around if you need to. I didn't look before I started typing--but search through the archives (maybe using 448 or 447 models) I think there re some good posts about 2x4 pieces to prop up buckets etc.
Good Luck!

I have a 4320 and 485 BH and can't imagine how it could be any easier to install/uninstall the BH. No wrenches or tools are required. To install the BH just remove the pins for the lower 3 PH arms and remove arms. Back tractor up to the BH and raise it in place using the 3 PH lift and insert/lock two top pins in place. Remove power beyond hose and attach two BH hoses. Reverse the above procedure to uninstall BH. That's it!!
Use the BH Operators Manual the first couple of times and it all becomes automatic. My BH is not installed 95+% of the time. It's installed only when necessary to do BH work like today I had to put in a new culvert pipe and it took only a few minutes to attach the BH.

Good luck with your new tractor and enjoy your new investment.

A couple scrap 2"x6"x2' under the frame helps ,when the seals get worn and it drop as it sets to keep it from dropping too low.The pins get broke in in time its great.I had a mechanical thumb installed great deal.I'm on my third tooth sugest a weld on spare and just a tooth if you play with big rocks.

Hi
I agree with cinder again, mainly you gotta be patient with yourself, once or twice and you will see. practice, practice, practice, salesman should go over this till you are satisfied. ITS just not that hard!
