well that changes things.

If it is indeed the freeze plug, Just replace it.

And yes, its about the size of a silver dollar.

I use a hammer and punch then a pair of channel locks.

thanks guys. LD1 the video was perfect. Boy I sure feel dumb now. Of course its a freeze plug. Farmed and worked on old junk my whole life. Had to rebuild a JD 620 in a corn field once but I didn't know I was looking at a freeze plug....how embarrassing!!!

I was wondering if it was some sort of freeze plug, but hadn't ever seen one like that. Round, about the size of a silver dollar? Doesn't appear to have any threads though and no clear way to remove it, so I just assumed it was a casting mark. I'm sure it's not a crack. Two little pin holes. How in the world do you replace it???

threaded core plugs were not out on ford tractors till the beginning of the 3 cyl series model years / 64.. etc..

pop it out with a screwdriver and ahmmer. that's all i've ever done to a core plug...

The objective is to flatten the Welch plug so that it spreads out and jams in the hole:
1. Ensure the plug receptacle in the block is squeaky clean.
2. Coat the block with Loc-Tite and insert the plug. Permatex Form-A-Gasket #1 is a suitable alternate.
3. Use two ball peen hammers - One as a buck to achieve a flat hammer strike.
4. The edges of an installed plug may be staked to improve retention.
5. Again, the goal should be an installed plug that is visually flat.
6. Use brass Welch plugs if you can find them. They are 1-3/16" diameter.

While you're at it, it's a fair bet the other plugs are in the same state of rusting out - So may as well do all of them.
