I am trying to decide on a 492 or a 5455. I was wanting opinions on both tractors and maybe some average prices. I am going to get a FEL with the tractor. Neither tractor has a cab. So far I have been quoted:

36,000 492

42,000 5455

That is with a MF FEL

Thanks,

Bryan

Sir;

The price you were quoted on the 492 seems a bit high; moreover, if all is as it was 2 years ago (which it may not) you can't get a shuttle shift on the 492. If you're going to be working a FEL for any length of time, the shuttle is virtually mandatory.

Further, I suppose you are talking about a 4WD for each, which again is virtually a necessity if you do a bunch of FEL work...

The 400 series is the "utility" line.. I have a 471 by the way. the 4-number series is the standard, or upscale line, which is made in France as opposed to Brazil for the 400 series (not a factor in my opinion, but a consideration). One of the main differences is the hydraulic pump - gear-driven on the 400 series vs. vanes driven on the other...

In Feb '05 I paid 35K for a 491/4wd/cab/1070 loader with bucket and spear. 36k for an open platform 492 is out of line! There is no transmission "options" for the 491/492 - you get a 3 speed with high/low and a high/low range splitter - 12 forward and 4 reverse. The 5455 has the same perkins with many more options. Standard trans (was in o5 ) was a 16x16 mech shuttle with a 16x16 powershift power shuttle optional. My cost for a 5455 (cab 4 wd loader stand trans) was almost exactly 10k more. My 491 was the best $per HP in a 90 hp utility tractor that I could find. One can do very well without a shuttle(for part time hobby farming/haying/hay feeding) for 10K. You will like the hyd's and engine on either. Good luck!

Let me add to my first post. I am surely not "down" on the 5400 series. Its a nicer tractor. You will recoup a % of the higher initial cost on trade in( if you really farm and put hours on a tractor). The 16x16 trans would be more productive. You get ELC on the 3 point. A economy PTo option(which I really like). More erogomonic cab design etc etc. I went with the 491 because it fit my budget - NO PAYMENTS THANK GOD! Couldn't do that with the 5455. But the way I use the tractor - the 491 is not a handicap. Please let us know more about yourself (your profile) so we can offer suggestions.

Thanks for responding.

Both of these tractors have 4wd. I left that out, sorry.

Let me give you a little background. This tractor is not for me. It is for a friend of mine. I am running a 251xe, open platform, 4wd, live pto, bush hog FEL. I am only a hobby farmer.

I know the dealer. So my friend wants me make a deal on one of these two tractors.
I know about where the 45-60 hp range tractors should be but no idea about 90+.

I am just trying to keep my dealer friend honest, lol.

I called my dealer over the phone and these were the prices I was given.

MF 492 29,000.00
MF Loader 7,000.00
Bush Hog Loader 5,500.00

MF 5455 35,000.00
Loader Prices
Same as above

He did tell me that there was "wiggle room" in the tractor prices.

I am just trying to figure out how much "wiggle room" there is.

Thanks again.
