I have a 4in1 bucket and am still learning the ropes with my tractor. I use the bucket a good bit opened up wide to doze and push stuff. It's great at that. However, for smoothing roads it works best closed and by backdragging in the float position.
But here's the tidbit...You can do a fairly good job smoothing with the bucket opened up, and lowered till the scraper is just touching the ground. Then move forward, and if you need to raise or lower the the bucket/scraper portion...CURL the bucket one way or the other...instead of raising/lowering it. The curl will raise/adjust the lip slightly...and much slower and gradual than raising/lowering it the normal way. Cuts down on the uneven ridges left in the road from overcorrecting when raising/lowering the old way. You need to go slow, too.
