Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a question, being new at tractors, I wanted to get a L3940 (loader & backhoe), I have about 60 acres and I am going to need at least this much HP, however, it will not be a lot of work, mostly digging, moving, taking trees down, etc, just occassionally, I have another piece of land, 6 acres that I also need some work, so I need something easily transportable, but have the HP when I get there...

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences pro and con, about either getting a 4n1 bucket, or just get a standard bucket with a grapple? I didn't mention, but on the 60 acres, it looks like it was a local landfill for people, and there are hundreds, if not thousands of bottle, tin cans, all kinds of metal, that I would like to clean up.

And I was wondering, on the backhoe, about adding a grapple claw...

any advice would really be appreciated..

thanks

My brother has a grapple and I have a 4n1. The grapple is much better for moving logs and brush. The 4n1 is ok for moving logs, bad at moving brush but great for dirt work.

As far as picking up trash. I used plywood and made my 1 yd bucket hold about three yds. I would pull up next to a trash pile and the whole family would fill the bucket. I would then go dump into a roll off. We moved several hundred yds of trash this way.

A thumb on a backhoe bucket would be great. I'm not sure what a grapple on a backhoe would give you unless you were stationary and loading a trailer sor something. I have used the backhoe bucket to move some stumps and once you raise the stabilizers, you really can't move that much weight safely.

I would get the Kubota HD round back bucket and ALSO a grapple. Markham now sells a $1000 delivered q/a type grapple. You can't beat there pricing. Just make sure you order the tractor with the factory front remotes and skid steer type q/a option or have your dealer add them.

A 4in1 is great for picking up dirt or mulch as you can basically use the clamshell to scoop it up off a flat surface like a driveway. They have limited capacity though compared to a "normal" bucket. For general grapple work for trees, brush, rocks, etc. a dedicated grapple works much better.

On my B3030 I have the Kubota 60" bucket with a tooth bar and also a separate dedicated WR Long Grapple. I think that is the best way to go as the skid steer type q/a lets you switch them out in a minute.

I have a 73 inch Bradco 4-1 bucket and a kubota 72 inch bucket with a Thumb welded on to it. In restrospect all I use is the general bucket to do most things and use the tumb to grap rocks or tree limbs. So if cost is important you can not beat a welded on Thumb to a std bucket and you dont give up much. If you want to rake and pickup trash then you need to go with one of the dedicated grapples. Hope this helps

I agree with all your statements except that in many cases a 4-in-1 bucket
will work better with rocks, vs a grapple bucket. When lifting a single large
rock, a grapple and 4-in-1 will work similarly well, limited mostly by lifting
capacity. When lifting multiple rocks the size of basketballs and smaller, a
4-in-1 will work better, IMO.

I have both a 4 n 1 and a brush grapple. Got them several years ago. The 4 n1 is so hady that I have NEVER used the brush grapple. Every time I look at it, the grapple, I think of many other things that I could have done with the 2500 $...

For cleaning up bottles, sorry, there is NO tractor loader attachment that will not produce a lot of broken glass. You need to pick up glass one at a time by hand.
Broken glass will be just as sharp 20 years later don稚 cause yourself a bigger clean up problem than you already have... KennyV.
