Hey Mark...I have done that, too. Open up the top portion and drive up against the tree with it and lower the bucket. Works good on pines, and not so good on some other species of trees. I mainly do it to open up shooting lanes for hunting. It works the best on the more brittle breaking limbs. I also use my 4in1 a lot for pushing stuff.

I use mine for all the usually stuff like picking up logs and such that would require a chain and leaving the tractor. Pulls small trees well and grabs brush fairly well.
Another thing that I have found is that with the tractor in reverse back grading with the front portion of the bucket open and engaged in the ground is very nice and leaves a smooth finish. It is also a pretty good digger when used in this fashion. It will cut a nice 4-6" depth swath in the ground and leave the dirt in place to scoop on return forward trip.
One of the drawbacks to a 4n1 is that they are usually smaller in capacity than the standard bucket. I always wondered why and ask Mr. Long of WR Long and he explained that they are heavier and it would lower the lift weight of your FEL if made full size. Also a little harder to make it full size and have all the advatages of the 4-1 according to him.

My son has used it to stir a fire with a long stick clamped in the bucket teeth.

They are also about a grand more when you buy them.

I've used mine many times to haul my live trap (usually has an expired skunk in it) out to the hole I dug with my other bucket, aka backhoe.

Interesting post, looking for a bucket myself. What would be a good bucket, four-n-one type for a JD 5203?

I can get the Frontier 512 for $4500 at the JD dealer, but it is a straight loader and I would be willing to pay more for a 4N1. tks

WR Long made mine and they are located in NC. They will not quote you a price direct, but will work with you thru a dealer. They can supply custom extra valves and hoses needed as well. They have a website that will show different models and find a dealer near you. Google WR long.

I just purchased a Construction Attachment 4 in 1 for my NH TC40. Its a 72 inch 4 in 1 with a bolt on reversible cutting edge, that ran me about $2400. They have heavier duty units as well. Bradco is another solid brand, a bit more expensive. Everythingattachments.com has these bucket with free shipping and you don't pay sales tax. I ended up buying mine from my local NH dealer - they matched the price although I had to pay sales tax. Guess I was in a good mood and wanted to give them some business.
