Thanks for your help. My tractor (Mahindra e-max 22) is stuck in 4WD. It has gotten stuck in 4WD frequently ever since I got it new (2015). I would let it sit for a day and I could get it back into 2WD. The dealer was informed of the problem but they kept telling me that there is nothing they could do because if they come and pick it up then I would have to pay hundreds of dollars for the transportation if there isn't a problem? And of course there wouldn't be a problem when they tried to fix it because it would go back into 2WD after sitting a day. Then the defected muffler broke, for the 2nd time. They came and picked it up and I told them to look at the 4WD. The tech I spoke to said he greased something up because it looked like it was never done before and it worked fine until now. My question is, what could have been greased up to fix this problem? Sorry about the rant, I have had so many problems with this thing. Note, in order to change from 2WD to 4WD I slowly drive forward in 1st low and push the lever to 4WD per the instructions.

Try this. Using the loader, lift the front wheels off the ground, then shift out of 4WD.

This is a very common problem .Several of my tractors do this all this all the time. Do as achingback says and it should come right out of 4 wheel drive.

And I thought I tried everything. Thanks

If that doesn't work, drive it around in reverse for a while. Then, try the above. Also, sometimes it helps to snap sharply up or down on the lever, instead of a steady pull.

Update. I lifted the front and tried working the lever for a while. Still didn't work. Drove forward, back left right and everything in-between. Probably looked a little crazy. Exasperated, I slowly crept along and I heard a satisfying "CLINK" and it was out. Of course I had to put it back in because I was moving some gravel and now I can't get it out again. It's good to know that it is a fixable problem. Thanks for your help everyone.

What I do is if I have been going forward put it in reverse and apply pressure to take it out of 4wd as you bump it backwards & forwards. It usually pops right out when I do that. Works every time for me. Best of luck to you.

I have same year and model. I find my 4wd is sometimes hard to disengage, but have found that if you have the steering straight and rock the machine btwn forward and reverse, it usually pops out easily the point being that if there is any drag between front and rear axles it will cause it to “bind” and be hard to shift. This issue can be made worse if your front or rear tires are at different pressures, or one set is more worn than the other. Like another person said earlier, lifting the front end off the ground may help alleviate some of the binding and allow you to shift easier.

Update. I used a 1 inch wrench to get the tractor out of 4WD. It changed super easily so it occurred to me that there is probably something else wrong. As it turns out, the lever is attached to a rod about a foot down which moves another lever and then another lever. The first lever is supposed to swivel around the rod but it was seized up so I put some WD40 on it and it moves now. I'm thinking about putting on a grease fitting but the steel seems a bit thin. That must be what was lubed up at shop. It also makes sense why I could change it when the tractor cooled down after a day or so.
