The short story is I have no manual for my 40D. How should set the 4WD mode? The little pictures on the stickers for the lever are meaningless! Why can't they just label things what they are instead of using cryptic symbols? I have supersteer and live on 20 or so acres of hilly forest and pasture in Oregon so it can be pretty soft ground in winter. Should the lever to left of the seat be forward or back? The hook shaped lever on the floor up or down?

Thanks,

Flint

Flint,

The operator's manual can be had for about $30 from New Holland,. You need to poke through their web site. I had a hell of a time getting it delivered but once they focused on my order it came in a couple of days.

On my TC35 (non-hydro) there are three levers on the right floor...one is a differential lock, another the parking brake and the other a foot throttle. The most "hooked" is the foot throttle, but I am farily sure this is not on the hydrostatic version of the TC. The differential lock has a slight "L" to it, and the parking brake is simply a straight rod near the brake pedal. "D" models may have some other hooked lever.

Left of the seat on the geared tractor are the range selector and the four-wheel drive selector. Range selector is the one that moves forward and back. Four wheel drive selector is in FWD when the bar is pulled up. Of course I don't know beans about how the Deluxe series are arranged. Some modest trial and error, at low engine speed, in advance of the arrival of a manual seems like it would be OK. And others who actually have the "D" model may have more useful specific advoce here.

I couldn't agree more! When you have to either read the manual or read the picture, they're worthless.

Lever Foward = 4WD

The hook shaped lever on the floor up or down?
Down = locked rear differential

Flint,
There is also a lever that moves up and down on your left under/next to the seat. It is sort of next to and under the seat swivel lever. This engages the sensitrak for your suspersteer. With this engaged (up) your 4wd will engage as need if the wheel speeds differ between the front and rear wheels. Engaging your 4wd lever by the fender just overrides this.

To expand further on what has been told here already, if you have Supersteer, you've got 3 options, 4wd auto, locked into 4wd, and 2wd. If the lever is pulled all the way back, it is in 4wd auto mode; meaning it is in 4wd, but the sensitrack clutch will disengage in places you don't need it, such as going through a sharp turn (to eliminate scuffing). Push the lever to lock it into 4wd. I assume you would do this when doing something where you wanted to be sure you were in 4wd, like pulling a plow or something. To get into 2wd, you use the little crooked hook beside the left side of your seat. This will override the sensitrack clutch. I believe the manual says the use for this is when transporting it, on pavement and such.

I believe most people leave their's in 4wd auto 98% of the time or more.

Hope this helps.

I heard it was so that literate and illiterate people could be equally confused...
