Ford 1720
I have a Ford 1720 that sort of growls and sound like it's gears are dry when traveling in 4 wheel drive and occasionally will pop out of 4x4... I don't generally travel with it in but sometimes I forget to take it out... I can use it with the loader, tiller, snow blower etc. with no problems... When the tractor was new (1992) I could mow in 4 wheel drive now I can't always trust it at a higher speed on a hill... Is there anything relatively inexpensive that can help this situation???
Thanks!!

It might simply be an adjustment.
On some there is a method to adjust for full engagement like mine has.
Where the selector arm is, if the pivot plate is external and fastened with 2 bolts have a look to see if the plate is slotted, if so sliding the pivot plate fwd or backwards will re position the pivot point.
It is always possible that your 4WD is being engaged only on the tooth tips.
Slipping out of 4WD while running and under tension over time will round out the gear edges especially if only partially engaged at the tips.

Thanks PILOON, I'll get it checked out... what tractor do you have??

My tractor is a Mitsubishi MT180D.
Both the 2/4 WD selector and the PTO (3speed) selector shifters have this adjustment features.

In fact there is even a possibility that your tractor is a rebadgered Mitsubishi as at some time Mitsu did make units for other brands.
One other possibility is that the fork that shifts the gear in/out is bent but hopefully not as that would call for splitting tractor for access.
Is that 2/4 shifter located on fright side of tunnel near your right foot? (like my Mitsu?)

Yes, it's a pull up to 4x4 and can be done while moving... I'm hoping there's some adjustment. I can use it for most things that I do but I know it's not a good thing when I forget to take it out of 4 wheel and it jumps out on its own..... I'm going to have some work done on it, changing hydraulic fluid and filter and adjusting lifters, brakes etc. I'll ask my tractor mechanic about adjusting the 4 wheel engagement...

Thanks Again!!!

The 1720 Ford was made by Shibaura. I believe that all compacts for Ford, Ford/New Holland, and then New Holland, were Shibaura units. New Holland switched to LS sometime around 5 years ago or so???

I owned a 1720 for 10 years and it performed flawlessly during that time. Good luck on the adjustment and keep us updated on your progress.

Thanks!! I'll post the outcome one way or another.... I bought the Ford in 1992 and just turned 1700 hours...... She deserves a little extra TLC....

I still haven't been able to get the tractor looked at as the mechanic is waiting for parts for another job... Has anyone had to repair a 4 wheel drive on a 20 series and about what would it cost... I have a repair manual and I couldn't find where there's any adjustment.... I've got a lot of hills and need a 4x4 that's dependable. I've got 1700 hrs on the 1720 and hate to part with it...
